3051 imageHMVS Cerberus c.1865 watercolour by Josiah Taylor (1819-1877), minor water-stains at lower-left, framed, overall 104x52cm. HMVS Cerberus was a 'Monster' Class "breastwork monitor" with revolving turrets, and the first British naval ship to be solely steam-powered. Launched in 1871 as Flagship of the Victorian Navy, her flat-bottom and unimpressive appearance caused her to be ridiculed as the 'Floating Gasometer'. Following Federation, she was transferred to Commonwealth control & was a foundation ship of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) between 1911 and 1924, ending service as a secondary submarine tender. She was sold for scrap and, after being pillaged, was again sold to the City of Sandringham & was sunk to create a breakwater for the Black Rock Yacht Club. Her hulk is all that remains of the Australian colonial navies. Victoria's major naval shore facility is named HMAS Cerberus. The painting was commissioned by Sir George Frederic Verdon, Victoria's Treasurer &, from 1868, the Colony's first Agent-General in London. (Image1)
