[In 1823, Joseph Tice Gellibrand was appointed the island's first Attorney-General. An advocate for trial reform, he was at odds with the autocratic Governor George Arthur. In 1825, he was charged with unprofessional conduct & lost his government position. Later, along with John Batman, Gellibrand was a leading member of the Port Phillip Association]
