AUSTRIA: 1935 to Sydney with Costumes 10g & 1s plus Cathedral 2s all tied by Vienna '27.XII.35' cds, 'TELEGRAPHENAMT WIEN 1' b/s of same date for pneumatic transmission to airport, carried by Imperial Airways flight IE405 during which the City of Khartoum ran out of fuel two kilometers from Alexandria harbour, plunging into the sea & killing the nine passengers and three crew members, with the GPO Sydney explanatory leaflet which accompanied recovered articles, envelope in surprisingly fine condition under the circumstances. Sanford #351231; covers from this disaster other than from Great Britain are rare. (2)

AUSTRIA: 1938 to Victoria with "Vienna III, Germany" return address, Costumes 8g and Airmails 60g & 1s tied 'WIEN/23 IV 38/FLUGPOST' cds, Greek currency censor cachet on face, Melbourne '5MAY/1938' arrival b/s, light central fold & minor blemishes mostly on back. The German 'Anschluss' of Austria had taken place on 12.3.1938. Carried on Imperial Airways Flying Boat flight IE647 during which Castor landed at Corfu due to unspecified problems on 24.4.1938, the mail having to be transferred to Calpurnia which continued the same day.
