'OS' OVERPRINTS: 1895 part-presentation set comprising Diadems 8d, De La Rue 1d to 10d plus 1/- optd in Red, Perf 12 £1 violet & claret with Seriffed 'O S' (not issued thus), Centennial to 1/- (ex 8d), Allegorical 2½d, 1891 Surcharges & ½d grey all CTO with 'GPO'-in-Concentric-Ovals & subsequently with small 'Specimen' handstamp applied in black, generally very fine, large-part o.g. Very scarce.

Public outcry caused the withdrawal and destruction of the remainders of the collectors' sets. However, in respect of the presentation sets, of which 100 were prepared & 50 already distributed, it was decided not to destroy the remaining 50 sets. Instead, they were defaced with the small 'Specimen' handstamp Type 11. A virtually complete set of 34 - missing only the 5/- Map with 'O S' in Red - sold for $3450 at our auction of 23/9/2011. (18)

1888 local usage of Walter Akhurst & Co Printing Works illustrated advertising cover with the firm's details on a 'blackboard' & Centennial 1d affixed alongside what appears to be an advertising label for the firm but which is actually printed on the envelope, Sydney duplex cancel, part of the flap removed otherwise superb! A rare item that, in our opinion, is one of the most outstanding of all Australian advertising covers. [The only other example known to us sold at a Melbourne auction in 2017 for $655]
