1861-O
Confederate States of America Obverse (w/ die crack) NGC XF Details - Cleaned. A harsh grade by NGC as the coin has plenty of eye-appeal and no obvious evidence of being cleaned. The distinctive obv die crack (which is mentioned on the NGC label)
starts on the rim at K12 and extends downward to the bridge of Liberty's nose. This crack identifies the coin as having been struck by the Confederacy using the same obv die used to strike the famous half dollars with the CSA rev of which there are 5
known. Records show that 1,212,000 Seated Half Dollars were struck after the New Orleans Mint was taken over by the Confederacy on Mar 25th 1861; however, they are indistinguishable from those struck before Mar 25th 1861 by the federal government.
But a small minority of the confederate issue were struck from the obv die having the diagnostic crack, thus providing the evidence for these coins to be of Confederate origin. An ideal lot for the collector interested in Civil War history. (Image) (imageb)
