1853
"over 4" Arrows & Rays XF or very nearly so. Bowers refers to this variety as "853 over 854" suggesting that an 1854 die was needed to complete striking the 1853 issue late in that year. On the present coin, there is a small 5mm obv carbon mark from
the rim to the shield at K8; the over-date shows plainly. (Image) (imageb)

1853 No
Arrows "53 over 53" B1-A SEGS VF25 Cleaned. From the Larry Briggs Private Liberty Seated Collection. 1853 No Arrows Quarters represent a very scarce variety and the price guides prove it. These coins were struck to the tune of 44,200 before the
weight reduction that resulted in arrows at the date. The even scarcer over-date offered here is now referred to as a Re-Punched Date FS-301. It is listed in the July 2025 Greysheet at $2,750 in VF20. (Image) (imageb)

1854-O
Arrows "Huge O" AG. The wear is a bit uneven but the coin is 100% original and very nice for the grade. The reason for the large, misshapen O is unknown though several possible explanations have been offered. The most plausible is that the die was
sent to New Orleans w/o a mintmark (at the time, all dies were made and mintmarks punched at Philadelphia). An attempt to add the mintmark was then done by hand in New Orleans. A scarce variety and virtually all known examples are circulated. (Image) (imageb)

1855-O
Arrows VG+ perhaps a bit better (the rev is full F.) Bowers comments that the issue usually comes poorly struck, and most surviving specimens are low-grade w/ problems.

1856-S G+
perfect for the grade w/ most of "LIBERTY" still showing. Bowers notes that circulated coins are rare and most are in low grades. (Image) (imageb)

1860-S G.
The rev rim is a bit weak @ K7-9 but there is too much detail to call it an AG. Author Ron Guth has noted that this issue is very rare and that original, uncleaned examples of this date should be worth a significant premium. The present coin may fit
the bill - obv fields show some minor irregularities but there is no question regarding the coin's originality. (Image) (imageb)

1865-S G.
A bit weak but easily discernable. The obv is marred by an old gouge at Liberty's midsection extending into the shield. There is also an old rev scratch on the eagle's L wing. Still ok, and not as bad as its sounds. From a mintage of only 41,000
pieces. (Image) (imageb)

an excellent coin for the grade w/ no damage other than wear. From a mintage of only 16,800 so a very scarce coin in any condition (Image) (imageb)

1867-S
Fr-2 perhaps a bit better. Again, no abuse of any kind except natural wear. The rev is close to AG but the obv rim is gone from K10-3. At the time of striking, coins from the San Francisco mint received heavy wear. (Image) (imageb)

1884 VF
detail on a lightly polished planchet, the bigger problem is a large (3mm) depression in the center of the rev that looks like the start of a drill hole but not all the way through. From the low-mintage era 1879-1890, this is nonetheless a rare coin
with a mintage of only 8,000. (Image) (imageb)
