277 image 1900 $10,000 Gold Certificate F-1225c (Vernon-Treat) S/N H35366 VF. "National City Bank of New York" and the date June 3rd 1909 both handwritten on the note. All of the F-1225 notes have been redeemed and cancelled and they have no legal tender status today. They are collectable solely because they were tossed out the windows of the Old Post Office in Washington DC (where they were being stored) when the building caught fire on Dec. 13th, 1935. The notes were retrieved and saved by pedestrians that happened to notice them. Most F-1225's show some water or fire damage, but on the present specimen this damage is fairly minimal. Friedberg lists 29 known notes for F-1225c, whereas over 400 are known of F-1225h. However, in the marketplace, values tend to be consistent irrespective of relative rarity. (Image)
