Medals
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
244 image Norse Medal (1925) Thick lovely white MS63+ or better. Struck in 1925 at the Phila Mint, this medal commemorates the landing of the Norwegian vessel "Restauration" in New York harbor on Oct 9th 1825 bringing early Norwegian immigrants to the US. The medal has no denomination, therefore not legal tender; and though technically not a coin, it is sometimes collected as part of the US Commemorative Coin series. The medal was designed by James Earle Fraser, the famed designer of the iconic Buffalo Nickel. Of 33,750 with thick (2mm) silver planchets issued, many were returned to the mint and later melted because of less-than-expected sales levels. (They were sold for $1.25 by mail order.) The medal also exists in a scarcer "thin" form, where 1.6mm silver planchets were used. A rare gold version also exists (53 were distributed), and are quite valuable today, but needless to say, they are rarely offered. (Image) (imageb)
