291 image 2nd Issue 50¢ Specimen F-1314 net XF. Friedberg states that F-1314 (no surcharges) only exists as a specimen. Not heavily embossed but the bronzing on both sides is adequate. CSA watermark is clear. The two right corners are weak and there is a small stain in the LR corner of the back. Specimens were intended to be used on Fractional Currency Shields to help vendors identify counterfeits. They are printed on only one side. (Image) (imageb)

293 image 1896 $1 Silver Certificate "Educational" F-224 (Tillman-Morgan) S/N 285533 Fine w/ nice corners and centering. A nice mid-grade Educational. This series of silver certificates enjoyed a rather short run at the end of the 19th Century, and although today we consider them to be artistic and beautiful, the bank tellers of the day complained that they were difficult to sort and count because the denomination of the notes (they were printed as $1, $2, & $5 bills) was not boldly displayed in the reverse corners. This could be true if you look at the backs of this series carefully, but whether it is indeed fact or folklore, we'll never know for sure. (Image) (imageb)
