160 image 1845-O PCGS AU50. This is the re-punched date variety with an extra 4 and 5 showing clearly under the main digits of the date. In their text on gold coins, authors Garrett & Guth describe the 1845-O eagle as " . . . . very rare in AU condition, with Mint State examples exceedingly rare." (Of 168 total 1845-O Eagles graded by PCGS, only 6 are in mint state.) The PCGS website shows the value of the re-punched date variety at $4,250, but interestingly, the last auction record for one in AU50 is from Feb 2018 where one sold for an astonishing $5,760, making our estimated hammer prices appear quite conservative. Whatever the true value, this lot represents an offering that is not likely to be repeated any time in the near future. If your tastes are in rare gold coins, here's an opportunity. (Image) (imageb)
