Schuyler J. Rumsey Philatelic Auctions Sale - 98

The Transportation Sale - July 31, 2021

We are pleased to offer specialized collections of French Ballons Montés and United States Railroad Postal History. A total of 621 lots are included comprising three specialized collections: the B.D. Forster Collection of Ballons Montés, the Marigny Collection of Ballon Montés, and the Hugh V. Feldman Collections of United States Railroads. Collectors will be surprised by the depth both specialized groups, which include many rare and impressive items.

The B.D. Forster collection of Ballons Montés covers was formed over 80 years ago and is one of the finest ever assembled. The collection includes virtually every flight with many rare usages and destinations. The collection was last exhibited in the 1956 FIPEX International Exhibition in New York, where it was awarded a gold medal. Some selected sale highlights include Nov. 23rd 1870 cover to Panama carried by the Ville d'Orléans (unique destination); December 12th 1870 cover to Santiago de Cuba carried by the Ville de Paris (one of two to Cuba); December 12th 1870 to Lima, Peru carried by the Ville de Paris; and December 2 nd 1870 cover to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil carried by the Franklin. Combined with the Marigny collection there are a remarkable 217 Ballon Montés and Papillons de Metz lots, a fabulous opportunity for collectors to acquire items that have never been offered publicly.

The Hugh V. Feldman Collections of United States Railroads of 404 lots includes numerous rare and unique markings starting with the earliest dated railroad handstamp of "Baltimore R.R." in 1838, Mohawk & Hudson R.R. "Rail/Road" two-line 1839 handstamp, numerous 1847 Issue railroad uses including Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad #1 pair use, Civil War patriotics and Confederate uses, illustrated advertising designs, etc. We hope you enjoy this wonderful collection offered in 404 lots that shows the importance of railroads in the movement of the mails.
