1860, 24¢ gray lilac. Red grid cancel, exceptional centering amid wide margins with design clear of perforations at top and bottom (extremely rare thus), intensely rich color, Extremely Fine to
Superb, with 2020 Crowe certificate Graded (XF-Sup 95, SSV $3,650). Scott No. 37; $375.
AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 24¢ WASHINGTON ISSUE.
Although the 24¢ denomination was introduced in 1857, it
was not put into use until July 1860. The issue was demonetized only thirteen months later. The 24¢ denomination was primarily used for the 24¢ U.S.-G.B. treaty rate to the United Kingdom. Toppan Carpenter's typically erratic perforating
continued with the 24¢ issue, coupled with the short period of use, are the primary reasons why superb used examples of the 24¢ 1860 are so difficult to find. (Image1)
