1938, 1¢ Presidential, Artist Model Drawings. Group of 4 different 6"x7" designs in green on 10"x12" thick cards by artist Alexander O. Levy for the Presidential Issue design competition, Levy
(1881-1947) was a very active artist with works including paintings, posters, prints, murals and designs; few stains or age spotting, still Very Fine group. Scott No. 804E; Estimate $300 - 400.
At the suggestion of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Post Office Department opened a national competition in 1937 to design the first stamp in a new series of definitive stamps to be known as the 'Presidential Series'. Artist Elaine Rawlinson of New York City won the contest.
