Feb. 17th to New York arriving Mar. 8th, red "Hamburg Packet, Paid 3" exchange credit cds for 3¢ inland postage via rail to Independence Mo. and then Santa Fe Trail to Santa Fe; reduced slightly at right, couple stamp flaws, Very Fine and
rare Prussia use to New Mexico Territory.

 Camden. APril 3. Straightline postmark and manuscript "12½" rating 1799 folded cover with partial letter to Augusta Ga.; some fold separation and splitting, F.-V.F.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS CAMDEN STRAIGHTLINE POSTMARK, THE EARLIEST HANDSTAMPED MARKING OF THIS TOWN.
The sender was Joseph Brevard, who moved from North Carolina to Camden right after the Revolutionary War and in 1789,
the Legislature elected him sheriff of Camden District. When admitted to the Bar in 1792, he began a long career as a lawyer, judge on the S.C. Supreme Court and U.S. Congressman 1818-1820.
This cover was found on Ebay by the consignor. Only
manuscript markings were used at Camden until the introduction of a cds in 1814. Since there was no printing press in Camden at this time, it is believed that the Postmaster likely brought a set of type from Charleston to use for this postmark.

THE LATEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE CHARLESTON COLONIAL MARKING, THE ONLY CDS USED DURING THE COLONIAL
PERIOD AND THE FIRST CDS USED BY THE AMERICAS.
This letter was sent just prior to Charleston being occupied by the British from 5/12/1780 to 12/14/1782. The sender, John Lewis Gervais (1741-1798) was an American planter and statesman from
South Carolina. Gervais first served in the revolutionary Provincial Congress in 1775. He was a member of the state's Committee of Safety from 1775 to 1781. Under the new state government, he was elected to South Carolina's Senate in 1781 and 1782.
He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783. (Image1)
