The 6d plate was ordered in 1858 to provide a stamp to prepay postage on letters to the United Kingdom from March 27th 1857. For almost 2 years, the 6d rate was paid by strips of three of the 2d stamp. The premium route "Via Marseilles" required an additional 1d and 2d stamps (9d for ¼ oz. letter).

Two singles in shades, each with barred oval cancel and one with unusual corner cancel, exceptional presentation of the original design, both with unusual transfer lines that do not appear on the original issue, one example (illustrated) with 1995 P. Holcombe certificate stating in short "in my opinion genuine…There are diagonal lines which do not appear on the original stamp. I think therefore the marks are from poor cleaning or inking of the original plate." and both with 2014 R. Odenweller certificates stating "it is a photo-reproduction with fake cancellations", Very Fine, a fascinating pair of forgeries. Scott No. 9F.
