121       imageFort Bridger, U.T., Feb 21. Bold sharp cds on ca. 1856 legal size cover to Columbia, Mo., matching straight line "Paid" handstamp and "6" double rating; cover reduced at right refolded at other sides, Very Fine appearance, from 1853 until October 1857 the Mormons occupied this fort.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

Originally an emigrant stop, by this period, Ft. Bridger was almost 100 miles out of the way. However, unlike the rest of the region, this spot had plenty of trees and fresh water. Thus, it was an ideal spot for the overland mails.

Dateline on folded letter to Maumee City, O., carried to Fort Leavenworth and placed on Missouri river steamboat with red straight line "Steam 10" handstamp, with lengthy letter from immigrant to California with interesting content regarding size of various wagon trains, "no danger apprehended from the Indians" as there are so many on the road, mentions travelers lightening loads "here and about Fort Laramie, heaps and pile on tons of provisions and all other kind of valuables are thrown away…Everything but what can be packed and their mules"…"We shall now probably take the Salt Lake and Mormon City and Humbolt River route", etc.; some edge staining, otherwise Very Fine.

A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE WESTERN RAILROAD PROPAGANDA DESIGN WITH THE CHORPENNING ROUTE DESIGNATION.

Less than eight examples of this railroad propaganda design are known with the "Via Placerville and Salt Lake" Chorpenning Route designation. The same design is more common with the "Via Los Angeles" Butterfield Route designation.

As the Union Pacific Railroad was building track from Omaha City westwards, the Central Pacific Railroad was building track eastwards from Sacramento. The Pacific Union Express Co. had a close working relationship with the Central Pacific Railroad. Apparently, this letter was carried by Pacific Union Express to the Central Pacific Railroad, which carried it to the eastern railhead, and subsequently placed in the mails to Wisconsin.

By the end of 1867, a large portion of eastbound stagecoach mail was being deposited at the Union Pacific Railroad terminus at Omaha City Nebr. From there, the mail was carried to its destination.

At first, construction went reasonably quickly across the plains of Nebraska, but once in Wyoming Territory, progress was slowed to about one or two miles per day. On October 1, 1868, the Union Pacific had reached Green River; however, he next 130 miles to Echo City would take until the end of the year.

Excellent transcontinental railroad content, "…Great events are expected on the completion of the Pacific Railroad which will be in about 20 days. The 1st train through the United States is looked for on July 4th, which will be the occasion of a grand jubilee." The railroad's completion would come only 17 days later with the ceremonial spike at Promontory on May 10th.

THE ONLY RECORDED COVER ENDORSED FROM PROMONTORY, UTAH TERRITORY.

The linking of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads would be May 10, 1869. The agreed place was Promontory, Utah Territory. The sender of this cover was probably with the advance construction team. Because Promontory was in the middle of the desert, there was no post office; the only possible marking was docketing as shown here. Wells Fargo & Co. carried the mail by stage coach to the Union Pacific railhead.

THE ONLY RECORDED COVER POSTMARKED ON THE DAY THE GOLDEN SPIKE WAS DRIVEN CONNECTING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD, AND CARRIED EAST ON THE SPECIAL FIRST DAY TRAIN.

The transcontinental railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. The Central Pacific had laid 690 miles and The Union Pacific had laid 1,087 miles.
