The Fort Laramie Post Office was the first Post Office in what is now Wyoming. The Post Office was established in 1850 in unorganized territory and assigned for administrative purposes to Oregon Territory until Nebraska Territory was created in 1854.

Balloon cds on cover to Newton, Iowa, original stamp excised and 1861 3¢ rose with target killer added, with original letter from a man to his sister datelined "Ft Laramie Idaho Ter, Jun 28th 1864," with interesting content…There is a heavy emigration on the road mostly for Idaho, I do not anticipate any trouble from the Indians although they are pretty saucy and have committed some depredations along the roadWrite to me at Virginia City, Idaho., Very Fine appearance, with 2010 P.F. certificate.

The Fort Laramie Post Office was transferred from Nebraska Territory to the original Idaho Territory when the latter was created in 1863. The Post Office continued to use "Nebraska" postmarks while in Idaho Territory.

The Fort Randall Post Office was established in Nebraska Territory in 1860. The Post Office was transferred to the original Dakota Territory when the latter was created in 1861. This cover was postmarked just two days prior to the change.

Clear strike of Fancy Blue Oval Eagle Handstamp with Oregon Route designation on 1852 folded letter to Cog Hill, Tennessee, with manuscript "June 1/52" date and matching "5" rate, with letter datelined "Fort Kearney, May 26th, 1852" noting…we arrived here all wellwe are three hundred miles from St. JosephI will write from Fort Laramie about 3000 miles ahead, Very Fine.

ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE FANCY FORT KEARNY O.R. "OREGON ROUTE" EAGLE HANDSTAMP OF THE FOUR EXAMPLES RECORDED.

By the 1850's, the commonly called Oregon Route, or O.R. was formerly known as the Oregon Trail, that being the route of Oregon emigrants. This letter was sent with the the Woodson Contract mail for Independence, Mo.

114       image(Oregon Route) Ft. Laramie O.R., Dec 15. Cut out of postmark affixed contemporarily by sealing wax on military monthly report to the Quarter Master General in Washington D.C., datelined "Fort Laramie, O.R., December 11th, 1851", Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Monthly reports were generally sent to the Quartermaster's General Office by military courier. Instead, the U.S. mails were used for this dispatch. The Woodson Contract called for mails to depart Ft. Laramie of the 15th of each month. Heavy winter snows delayed delivery for a month as the backside of this letter is docketed "Rec'd Feb 10/52". Military filing practice was to cut out the date mark from cover.

A VERY RARE FORWARDING USAGES OF THE FORT LARAMIE OREGON ROUTE POSTMARK.

A Post Office at Fort Laramie on the Oregon Route or Oregon Trail across the plains was established in 1850. The Post Office was located in unorganized territory but attached to Oregon Territory for administrative purposes and was the last Post Office on the Oregon Trail going west.

It was divulged that Federal troops were on their way to remove Brigham Young as governor, as well as all other Mormon officials. Young threatened to burn Salt Lake City if troops came into the city, and indeed he removed all the in habitants. The troops arrived, but stopped east of the city at Camp Scott. A compromise was reached in mid-June 1858, by which the troops moved straight through to the west on June 28 in order to establish Camp Floyd. This fort, ironically, was named after the Secretary of War, which had been a vigorous proponent of the strife.

Exceptional strike of homemade fancy integral rate postmark tying 1857, 3¢ dull red on cover to Portland, Me., pencil "Rec'd March 21, 1859" and docketed "Lieut Jno Edwards, Jr., 3rd Reg U.S. Artillery, Camp Floyd, U.T., via St. Joseph" on reverse; stamp with small margin nick and professionally restored cover tear at top, Very Fine appearance, a rare example of this provisional integral rate postmark, ex-Beals.

Within a week, the "Paid 3" was no longer used integrally with the townmark and was later to used independently in conjunction with this Camp Floyd postmark.

119 ()    11 imageFort Bridger, U.T., March 1, 1858. Clear two-line handstamp on rebacked cover front to Concord, N.H., franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair tied by second light strike of postmark, manuscript "Due 3" rate and "Recd April 8" docketing; light stain spots, Very Fine appearance, with 1997 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 11; Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

ONE OF THE FEW EXAMPLES OF THE FORT BRIDGER STRAIGHT LINE DATE STAMP AND THE ONLY USED ON THE 1851 ISSUE.

The fort was burned by the Mormons in October of 1857 at the beginning of "The Mormon War". Bridger than leased the land to the U.S. military, which rebuilt it with an official opening of June 7th 1858. This marking was struck while the fort was still under construction.
