 1894-1897, 1¢ Black on Buff, E. Louis Smith Counterfeit Exhibit Collection. Mounted exhibit collection mounted on 19 pages telling the story of E. Louis Smith from the first person, the exhibit starts with Smith's coating
business and examples of his coated ads, the two recorded UX12 counterfeits are present, a mint example defaced with red manuscript. "Counterfeit" by Inspector Cochran and a faulty used example with silver coating over previous address, and
11 UX14 counterfeits comprising 5 unused and 6 used, the four known plates are shown with mint or used examples plus an example that does not fit the other four plate and noted by Brad as a new fifth plate, includes the two UX14s confiscated by
Inspector Cochran and marked in red manuscript. "Counterfeit", also includes the original mailing by Cochran of his confiscated cards to Victory Mills N.Y.; accompanied by additional back up material and research on the subject., Very
Fine.

A REMARKABLE AND UNIQUE EXHIBIT COLLECTION OF THE E. LOUIS SMITH COUNTERFEITS.
This is a study of E. Louis Smith's postal card coating and printing business from
1895 until 1902, when he was sentenced to prison for two years for counterfeiting $100 of U.S. postal cards with 1894 and 1897 Jefferson designs. Postal Inspector W.E. Cochran discovered that Smith had been counterfeiting cards when he made a
surprise visit. He had come to inspect the size of Smith's stock of unusable postal cards and already coated cards and to tell him that coated cards had been invalidated three weeks earlier. The Post Office Department had long redeemed unusable
stamped envelopes and was going to being to redeem unusuable postal cards. The inspector noticed that Smith had blank card stock cut to size and a counterfeit plate mounted in his small press. Smith confessed to counterfeiting and was arrest on April
24th 1902.
Single examples of the UX14 counterfeit have hammered for between $375 and $750 in our past sales. The UX12 counterfeits have never been offered at public auction. (Image1) (Image2)

on this side - message on the other" printed at center, frameline around perimeter, mailed bearing two 2¢ red brown (210) singles, top tied by "Cincinnati O., Jul 14 '86" duplex addressed to Chicago Ill., returned with
second 2¢ tied by "Chicago, Ill., Jul 19 '85" duplex to R.W. Mercer at Cincinnati, Jul 26th receiver, message from R.W. Mercer reads "How much will you pay for the loan of this card with an article in regard to the merits of this
duplex post card. Reply on this card" and the response from Editor of The Stamp Collector: "We hardly see how we can use this and therefore cannot make an offer"; slight aging, F.-V.F., a rare through-the-mails use of a postal card
essay.

The postage on this card essay was of course not recognized as this was not issued by the Post Office, and therefore not a postal card. Mercer aggressively pursued acceptance of his
cards with many letters to the Post Office Department. Apparently, the only reaction of the Department was to take exception to Mercer's use of "U.S. Postage in his design. This essay was discussed in a Postal Stationery (Jul.-Aug.
