A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE IV, FROM THE ONLY RECUT POSITION ON THE RIGHT PANE OF THE PLATE.
When the plate was
being entered from the transfer roll (or rolls), three vertical rows were started with the B relief instead of the A relief. These were the first two rows of the left pane and the third row of the right pane. Only the first position in each
vertical row is misplaced -- the rest of the plate was laid out with the A relief used for the top two rows. Position 3R1, one of the three misplaced relief positions on the plate, also bears the distinction of being one of eight recut positions and
the only position recut on the entire right pane of the plate. (Image1) |

1857, 1¢ blue, type III, position 99R2. Perfs to just in at top, wide break evident at bottom, large part o.g.; margins at left & bottom slightly abraded from removal of toning, F.-V.F., with 2017 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 21; Estimate $15,000 - 20,000.
ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE PERFORATED 1857 1¢ TYPE III FROM POSITION 99R2. THIS IS THE ONLY UNUSED SINGLE AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.
Plate 2 was made in
late 1855, and consists of 198 stamps that are Type II, one position that is Type III (99R2) and one that is Type IIIA (100R2). The only other recorded unused perforate 1857 1¢ type III from position 99R2 is contained in a block
of nine (ex-Caspary, Lilly, Grunin, Ishikawa, Zoellner, currently in Gross collection). This is the only recorded unused single recorded.
The original entry of position 99 was out of place due to a misplaced guide dot used to lay out
position 89R, with the original transfer of 99R extending a full ¾ of a millimeter below the other nine stamps in this bottom row. To correct this error, the original entry was erased. A fresh entry was made, but a full transfer of the B
relief was not possible at the top, without running into the misplaced 89R entry. As a result, the fresh entry of 99R was short transferred at top in order to position the transfer correctly. For some reason, the bottom was also short transferred.
The reason that 99R2 is the finest example of Type III is because the very short transfer at top and at bottom yields wide breaks (see pages 183-184 of Neinken). (Image1) |

address to the Postmaster of Summer Me.; minor corner mend top left, Very Fine and choice, Simpson No. 92. Scott No. 25; Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.
THE FINEST OF ONLY TWO RECORDED ON COVER EXAMPLES OF THIS TYPE 3 CUMBERLAND
MAINE PRECANCEL. A GREAT RARITY OF CLASSIC PRECANCEL COLLECTING OFFERED AT AUCTION FOR THE FIRST TIME.
There are only four total strikes of the type 3 cancel known, two off-cover and two on-cover. The two recorded 3¢ 1857 Cumberland
precancel covers are: 1) Nov. 6, precancel ties #25 on faulty cover to Postmaster at Acton Me. (Illustrated by Milgram in Chronicle 206, p. 93, fig. 5) 2) Nov. 6, updated to Nov. 10, precancel ties #25 on cover to Postmaster at
Summer Me. The cover offered here.
Horace I. Gray was a "Card and Job Printer" located in Cumberland, Maine offering a variety of stationery merchandise. All of the known Cumberland precancels are on cover from only two firms, that of
Gray himself and the Portland firm of Sanborn & Carter. It is suggested that Gray did the printing for Sanborn & Carter, together with the mailing, thus accounting for the Cumberland precancel on the Portland firm's mail. Five distinct types of
the Cumberland precancel are known and are detailed in an article by Dr. James W. Milgram in Chronincle 206, May 2005, pages 90-96. (Image1) |
