Wade Saadi discussed misaligned plate entries in his August 2010 Chronicle article.
He suggests that the reason only five U.S. stamps prior to 1870 had framelines is because the siderographer had difficulty aligning the entries and, therefore, designs with ornamental frames produced a better appearance. (Image1) |

1861", he notes that it his opinion that this rare proof came into existence after 1857 and believes that this die was especially made for the 1875 reprint issue. The notation on reverse refers to a Bureau of Engraving and Printing employee who
