Great Britain, 1856 London to New York. Folded cover franked with 1847 1sh (four singles cut to shape) + perforated 1d red tied by numeral "17" grid cancels with orange London
Maltese Cross postmark on reverse, markings include ed "20 Cents" credit to the U.S. (4 x 5¢ per half ounce U.S. inland), red curved "Paid" and circular "X" hand-stamped, Very Fine. Scott Nos. 5+16; Estimate $300 - 400.
This franking paid the correct rate of one pence late fee, plus 1 shilling per half ounce for up to an ounce, and an additional 2 shillings for between one and two ounces, as G.B. had no triple rate. (Image1)

Great Britain, 1857 Chester, Great Britain to New York, N.Y. Cover franked with 1847 1sh green (cut to shape) + 1856-58 1d tied by numeral "180" barred oval duplex cancel of
Chester with brown manuscript underlined "above 1/2 oz" & handstamped "48" cents due marking, backstamped "Liverpool De 7, '57" cds, Very Fine. Scott Nos. 5+20; Estimate $150 - 200.
As this wasn't sufficiently prepaid, it was
treated as totally unpaid at the rate of 24 cents per half ounce. The only sailing that fits the Liverpool markings is that of the Collins Line steamer "Adriatic", departing on her final voyage for this line from Liverpool on 9-Dec-1857, arriving New
