The Sale contains 842 lots, it is representing two Russian Specialized Collections.
The first one is the John H. Avtsin Collection of Soviet Union Postal Advertising Labels of 1923-29, the other one is the Michael Pipe Collection of the Soviet Union of 1923-91.

The Postal Advertising Labels Collection contains 122 lots of unused or used labels, including 53 postal history items. The most valuable items are:

  • The label "Vigonevy Trest" (Spinning Mill Trust) in the block of four, used on the reverse of registered pre-printed cover from Moscow to Stockholm;
  • Two labels - "Krasny Proletariy" and "Mospolygraph", used on the reverse of registered cover from Moscow to New York, bearing mixed franking of RSFSR and Soviet Union adhesives;
  • The unused label "Moskovsky Mashinotrest" (Moscow Machinery Trust) with the definitive stamp of soldier 7k brown is affixed over;
  • Horizontal strip of three labels "Prombank", used on the reverse of official pre-printed Prombank cover, sent in Moscow;
  • Limited quantity labels "Gosrybsyndicat", "Khleboproduct" issued in Samara.
The Michael Pipe Soviet Union Collection (Lots #123-842) presents the first-class rarities acquired within several decades of active collecting, including a dozen items, which had never been offered to the public, such as:
  • 1926, Vladimir Lenin, imperforated proof of 3r in dark green (issued color), top right corner sheet margin block of four, printed on watermarked Squares and Angles paper (the same as Zeppelin set), probably unique multiple;
  • 1928, 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Leo Tolstoy, imperforated complete set of three essays of unaccepted design, raster printing on stamp paper, extremely rare, especially in a complete set;
  • 1944, First Anniversary of the Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad, proof of imperforated souvenir sheet containing four stamps of 30k brown and carmine and text in black at the top and bottom, according to our records that is the only souvenir sheet of the private ownership (listed in "Drafts of Stamps USSR 1923-60" on page 65);
  • 1952, Order of Lenin, two technological proof of 10r in black, each one is in bottom right corner sheet margin block of six (3x2), printed on watermarked "Shaded Stars" or "Shaded Diamonds" paper, both are the largest known multiples in private hands;
  • 1957, All-Union Industrial Exhibition, Tractor "DET 250", two proofs of unissued design and denomination of 1r in bluish green or ultra;
  • 1958, All-Union Industrial Exhibition, two reduced format perforated (L12½) proofs of 60k in brown or in deep ultra;
  • 1959, "Strengthening the Connection between School and National Economy", Students Driving a Combine, rejected design and denomination of 60k in blue green, nicely centered with intact perforation 12½x12 as issued stamps of 40k and 1r, probably removed from a presentation card.
