Postal History. 1858-59 Correspondence to India
four flimsy and more or less damaged envelopes franked 9d written in the same hand addressed to Captain Hales Wilkie, HM 97th Regt, Lucknow, Oude, India. Each franking includes 6d pale lilac SG #70 (cat £225 on cover) and one or
more 1d red-brown P14 SG #38-41 group. Three are from Deal with BN '240' cancels and the first (April 8, 1858) includes Brigadier Frank's Division in the address and is notable for the franking incl 2d blue P16 SG #36a Plate 6 [AF] with
Re-entry (SG-Spec #F8c cat from £550); the 3rd and 4th (Nov 24, 1858 and Feb 9, 1859) include 2d blue Plate 7 SG #45. The 2nd (Oct 1, 1858) is from Oxford with duplex BN '603' cancels. All with receiving, transit
and arr backstamp (blue, red, black). Stamps alone cat over £1,100. Also see Lot 1529 (4)
