Also 6 x 1d FFQ imperf with good strikes of 5/Otahuhu/A, Drury (2 diff), Queens Redoubt, Province of Auckland No 2, Headquarters (all 3-4 margins) & 3 x 2d blue perf with Port Waikato, A/Onehunga/A and Province of Auckland cancels. Also 5 more recent cancels: Pokeno, Miranda, Ngaruawahia, Te Awamutu & Gate Pa. Sender Octavius Harwood, was employed at the station in 1838 & stayed on after the closure as their Maori liaison officer & trader. He describes the whaling establishment remaining on the Otago Native Reserve. The entire to Sydney bears a 6d (SG 75) tied by DB "18" cancel. On reverse: "Port Chalmers" early cds & a ship-letter/A/Sydney cds. (Image)

Donald McLean, Native Minister, Auckland" ex Wellington (070 Duplex) bearing 3d mauve FFQ. 2) To "Hon Donald Maclean CMG Wellington", 2d vermilion FFQ tied by an Auckland duplex cancel. As Native Minister, McLean enacted the radical 1873 Land Act, & in 1874 was made a CMG and knighted. (Image)

Cover shows sender's name, rank & regiment (2/14th) along the top, signed on lower left corner by the Captain commanding detachment 2/14 Reg, Wanganui. These concession covers are scarce since most are now held in the Heritage Colln (Te Papa). Also incl a list of known covers ex Corp John Thomas & their current location (7 letters).
