AN OFFICIAL NOTICE to the PUBLIC - REGARDING WAR EMERGENCY MAILS for AUSTRALIA:
December 1854 notice, 51 x 29 cm, on VR watermarked paper, issued by the British Postmaster General, London, advising of the planned sailing on January 5th, of the sailing vessel "Lightning" "for the conveyance of the Mails....round
the Cape of Good Hope.....[with] Letters and Newspapers for New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Van Diemen's Land."
The notice explains that several of the steam vessels used by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Comapny, having been "required by Her Majesty's Government for the exigiencies of the [Crimean] War, they are unable to provide a
Steamer for the conveyance [of mails] from Singapore to Australia, hence the use of the just launched clipper, "Lightning". The Crimean War (1853-1856) was a conflict primarily fought on the Crimean Peninsula, involving Russia
against an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, and Sardinia. (Image 1)
