De Battenberg, franked with 2c (6, pair & block of 4) and 1c Definitives tied by 'DIV.de CERT/Habana - Cuba' undated registration cancels, boxed 'HABANA-CUBA/MAY 7' censor handstamp in violet, addressed to Heslop at Wonthaggi, then re-directed on arrival to the AFC at Laverton, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO & MELBOURNE registration backstamps and WONTHAGGI arrival datestamp with another REGISTERED/MELBOURNE datestamp applied following the re-direction; tad roughly opened at top, otherwise very good condition. Inwards WWI Australian Flying Corps covers are rarely encountered. Ex Perry. The sender, Coronel De Battenberg, is believed to be have been a nephew of Alfonso III of Spain and related by marriage to Lord Louis Mountbatten. Bill Heslop (1894–1983) attended No. 7 Course of Instruction in Aviation at Point Cook in early 1917. He was commissioned into the Australian Flying Corps on 1 May 1917, embarking for overseas service in June. After further training in England, in 1918 he joined No. 3 Squadron AFC in France where he was on Active Service between April and late October. There is a Courtyard named in his honour at the School of Army Aviation Officers' Mess, Oakey in Queensland.   (Image)
