342 C image1929 (Oct. 24) Interrupted Mail cover from London to Cohuna Victoria franked 4½d for 1½d Empire rate plus airmail surcharge 3d per oz to Iraq, boarded Oct. 26 on Imperial Airways flight IE31, which was to experience dual aircraft incidents in Egypt: (i) City of Alexandria upon landing Oct. 30 for refuelling at Mersa Mutruh experienced a wingtip striking a buoy, the aircraft was damaged, passengers and mail were transferred to (ii) City of Athens which, due to lack of wind on take-off had difficulty lifting, and ran in to a reef, ripping the hull. Pilot and passengers escaped unhurt, mail was subsequently loaded aboard City of Baghdad, which resumed the flight Nov 2 arriving Basra the following day, thence surface to Australia. The only recorded item to Australia from this dual incident; Sanford.291026. Ex Perry.

343 C image1930 (May 14) cover from Iraq to Cairns (Qld) inscribed 'AIR MAIL' segment scored-over and handstamped 'RECEIVED TOO LATE/FOR INCLUSION IN AIR DESPATCH', bearing British Occupation of Iraq 6a & 3a tied by Mosul double-circle cds, Baghdad (May 15) backstamp, minor flap fault. Given the article at 9a is sufficiently paid for airmail service to Karachi, for which rate was UPU 4½a (20-40gms) plus airmail surcharge 1½a per 10gms x3, the 'TOO LATE' marking must refer only to the Imperial Airways flight, which departed Basra May 15 1930.
