48 imageGreat Britain 1850 1d Prince Consort Essay, SGDP71b. A very fine and fresh unused, with original gum, four margin imperforate example printed in red brown lettered 'FJ'. Very scarce and a most interesting piece of postal production history particularly in that Prince Albert did not feature on any stamps issued by Great Britain. Based on evidence given to the 1851 House of Commons Select Committee, it is indicated the Prince Consort essays were prepared for Henry Archer in connection with his offer to produce surface-printed postage stamps and perforate them on more favourable terms than the existing contract at the time with Perkins, Bacon. Edwin Hill, Supervisor in the Stamp Department of Somerset House cautioned Archer's engraver, Reynolds, against use of the Queen's head. Archer took the advice and chose to use the head of the Prince Consort instead. This finished essay remains imperforate. The perforated examples which followed were perforated on the same machine Henry Archer used for his perforation experiments. GB Specialised Catalogue No: DP71b. SG Catalogue Value: £2,000.

61 imageGreat Britain 1856 1d red brown Plate 22 (Neale's Steam press experiment), SG29a. A very fine unused imperforate top marginal block of four with M sheet inscription lettered 'AC-BD'. Light wrinkling as usually found on examples of this failed printing experiment, which does not detract from what is a major Victorian philatelic rarity. Very scarce and the first time we have handled a block from Neale's failed printing experiment. Plate 22 was used for an experiment on Neale's steam press and was ungummed. Only one sheet, which has been cut up, survives. GB Specialised Catalogue No: C8h. SG catalogue value: £12,000+. The Story of Neale’s Steam Press Experiment Between 1854 and 1856, the Inland Revenue allowed Robert Neale, an American engineer-inventor to demonstrate a new steam-powered printing press for the 1d line-engraved stamps. Perkins Bacon cooperated, hoping for faster output than the hand presses used at the time. Trials began on 6 Jan 1854. The initial trial failed although a second trial on 25 Feb 1854 was judged “more successful.” The best-known run was a demonstration on 15 Aug 1855 when 2,000 sheets were printed. One intact imperforate, ungummed sheet from plate 22 (with a manuscript margin note, “This sheet is one of 2,000 Printed by Mr Neale’s Machine for us this day August 15 1855 / Perkins Bacon & Co”) surfaced later and was broken for collectors. Despite bursts of progress, four-day tests were ultimately reported “quite unsatisfactory.” Problems included sheet handling and creasing under the machine’s pressure. As a result, many surviving examples show heavy folds. The project was dropped and normal hand-press production resumed.

71 imageGreat Britain 1862 9d bistre Plate 2 (Watermark Emblems), SG86. A very fine and fresh unused example with original gum, lettered 'MC' of this very difficult adhesive. Small tone spots on perforations at top right, which does not detract from what is a very scarce stamp in this condition grade. The 9d value in 1862 was the rare at the time for postage to India, Australia and Brazil. The first printing plate (plate 1) was not registered or put to press. Plate 2 consisted of 240 stamps arranged in 12 panes, each pane of stamps in five horizontal rows of four. One of the hardest Queen Victorian surface printed stamps to find and the current SG catalogue value does not do justice to its level of rarity. Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £3,500.
