An exceptional multiple and a beauty to behold.
Because the 2d blue was issued contemporary with the 1d black, it shares the distinction of being one of the world's first two postage stamps. The die for these first 2d stamps was taken indirectly from the original die of the 1d stamps.

 Great Britain 1840 1d Rainbow Trial (State 3), SGDP20d.
A superb unused top marginal example printed in dull olive green on thick bluish laid paper.
GB Specialised Catalogue No: DP20d (State 3).
It has long been considered that the voiding of the corners was achieved by filling the grooves of the plate with wax. However, recent research has brought this assumption into question. It is believed that the wax could not have withstood the
immense pressure and would not have given a consistent result. To date, the exact method employed has not been determined, but is believed to either have been using a harder filling substance or the area being completely ground away.
In State 3, the corners were voided more carefully and are generally smaller and more uniform in appearance than seen in State 2.

 Great Britain 1840 2d Mulready Lettersheet (Forme 1, Stereo A103), SG ME3 – Rare
Used Example
A fine used example of the iconic 1840 2d Mulready lettersheet, Forme 1, Stereo A103, sent from London to Walton near Burton on Trent, and cancelled by a bold strike of the London No.2 Maltese Cross (allocated to the Lombard Street office).
Backstamped in both London and Burton on Trent for May 11 & 12, 1843, the cover retains strong visual appeal despite the side flaps having been removed. The cancellation is crisp, the printed design sharp, and the address panel attractively penned.
Issued alongside the Penny Black, the Mulready lettersheets were designed by William Mulready R.A. and engraved by John Thompson, intended to revolutionise postal stationery. The design, however, proved unpopular and was soon withdrawn, making intact
or well-preserved examples highly collectable today.
This example is from the important "Mayflower" Grand Prix collection and comes with a 2010 British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate of authenticity.
A scarce and desirable piece of early postal stationery history.

A very fine used example of this scarce parliamentary envelope printed on greyish wove paper, no watermark, addressed to Arbroath, Scotland and cancelled by a London "PAID" Crowned circle datestamp for 'MR.5.1840'.
Backstamped by an Edinburgh transit circular date stamp for 'MR.7.1840'.
A scarce pre-postage stamp philatelic item. Parliamentary envelopes were only valid for postage from the Inauguration of the penny post (Jan 10th 1840) until the Issue of the penny black and Mulready envelope (May 6th 1840).

Sent from London to Lucan, Dublin. Cancelled to the right of Britannia contrary to regulations by a Bridge St. Lamb handstamp and to the left by a Lucan arrival datestamp for 'AP.9.1841'.
Backstamped with a London dispatch circular date stamp for 'AP.8.1841' and a Dublin transit datestamp for the following day.
A fascinating and very rare piece of early British postal usage of the ill-fated Mulready letter sheets.

A very fine used four margin horizontal strip of four lettered 'AE-AH', neatly cancelled by crisp London No.12 Maltese Crosses. Central fold in margin between 'AF and AG'.
A most attractive multiple.
A superb and highly collectible example, presented with exceptional clarity and condition.

White lines were added to the 1841 printings of the 2d blue to distinguish them from the original 1840 2d blue printings.
According to the Treasury Minute dated 17 December 1840, it had proved impracticable to change the colour of the 2d blue to another light colour.
In accordance with the instructions “…as it may be important, hereafter, to have the means of distinguishing the new Twopenny Labels from the old ones, to make some alteration in the plate used for printing them,†the white lines were added.â€
The design of the 2d blue was therefore changed with a horizontal white line being added at the top and bottom. The new design became known as the “white lines added issueâ€.

 Great Britain 1841 1d red-brown Plate 11 trial printing on Dickinson silk thread
paper, SG16var.
A very fine unused four-margin example, lettered 'DI'.
A superb example of this rare trial printing, notably free from the creasing almost always encountered.
This trial was made following the trial printing of the 2d value of March 1841 in red using the 240-unit plate 11. The first and last columns of the stamps had no silk threads. The ink used blued the paper deeply. Eight sheets were printed six of
these being gummed, two ungummed. This paper was not considered to be as safe as the watermarked paper and was abandoned.

An exceptionally fine and fresh close to large four margin example lettered 'FF'. Benefits, in particular, from wonderful colour and gum.
A scarce early printing of the penny red hardly ever seen in this quality.
This printing of the first penny reds was produced from the famous plate 11 penny black plate (the holy grail of penny black collecting). The printing plate in black finished on 19 January 1841 and was registered in red on the 27th of the same month.
It was printed from in red on 29 and 30 January. On 1 and 2 February, 700 sheets were printed from it in black, and on 3 February for some weeks on it continued to be used for printing sheets in red. Plate 11 was destroyed on 15 January 1842.

A superb unused imperforate imprimatur from the top left corner of the sheet, lettered 'AA', showing part of the original sheet inscription “PRICE 1d Per Lab...†along with the clearly printed plate number “51â€.
Issued as part of the 1841 1d red-brown series, this imprimatur originates from the printer’s reference sheet, retained before official perforation and release. The presence of both the inscription and plate number makes this an especially
distinctive example.
Immaculately preserved with full original gum and wide margins, it is an important example of early Victorian production practice.
This stamp was previously part of the renowned Clark Collection (1946), a significant provenance.
