Cyprus 1879 (AU 8) printed "On Her Majesty's Service" envelope (with embossed Royal arms on flap), addressed to "Somerset French Esqre, British Postmaster, Larnaca", franked by GB 1878-80 1d rose-red plate 218, with small corner fault.
Tied by "969" numeral with NICOSIA despatch circular date stamp alongside and LARNACA arrival backstamp for the same date.
A rare and important 1d inland rate cover, exceptionally neat and clean. The "969" numeral postmark, used in Nicosia, is particularly important as it was the only one used which was not similar to those which had previously been used at post offices in Great Britain.
A similar cover from the Cruttwell collection realised £2,700 + premium (Argyll Etkin 9/03/07, lot 1113).
Great Britain assumed the administration of Cyprus on 11 July 1878. The stamps of Great Britain at the time were supplied to the various post offices as they opened. British stamps continued to be used until the Cyprus administration assumed responsibility for the postal service on 1 April 1880.

Cyprus 1880 (1 Apr) 4d sage-green, type 2 overprint on stamps of Great Britain, plate 16, SG4.

A very scarce and attractive multiple.

Cyprus 1881 (Feb) ½1/2d on 1d red, type 3 (18mm) surcharge, plate 216, lettered 'BG' and showing the 'HALF-PENN' variety (with traces of the 'Y' present as always), SG7a.
Brilliant mint example with part original gum. Corner gum crease immaterial to overall lovely appearance.
A very rare variety and the best quality example we have ever seen.
Provenance: Ex Richardson (RL 6/7/1960, lot 228).
The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £3,000.

Cyprus 1881 6pi olive-grey, watermark CC, BLOCK OF SIX (3x2) with watermark line at left, used with Larnaca squared circles dated 'AU 28 82', SG15.
There are some traces of wrinkling on the left pair, but in the context of "normal" condition for this stamp issue, this is still a fine and exceedingly rare multiple. Unused blocks are unknown.
The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £3,300+.

Cyprus 1882 '1/2'½" on ½ 1/2pi emerald-green, watermark CA, type 8 surcharge, block of 4 showing positions 3-4 of the setting, with variety 'Spur on 1' on left pair, SG25/c.
A fine mint block of four with original gum and with very fresh colour. Minor gum creasing and insignificant traces of gum toning mentioned for accuracy only, as a fine and rare block.
Surcharging was applied by a setting of six arranged as a horizontal row and this is a very attractive philatelic piece with the printing varieties showing on both of the left hand stamps.
Provenance: Ex Brewer. (Warwick & Warwick 3/6/1992, lot 2733).
