580 imageChina 1962 People's Republic China (PRC) general issues Stage Art of Mei Lan-fang 3 yuan miniature sheet, SGMS2044a. A fine unmounted mint example with full original gum. There is some light overall gum toning and a couple of trivial tones and wrinkles. These minor imperfections do not detract and are evident in almost all examples in existence. A modern People's Republic of China classic, highly sought after by collectors of modern Chinese stamps, and rare as only 20,000 were issued. Known as the "Drunken Concubine", it is China's most valuable miniature sheet, with legendary status amongst collectors. In the summer of 1962, eight motifs were issued by the People's Republic of China honouring the most famous performer of Peking Opera, Mei Lan-fang (1894-1961). The star of the show was this 3 yuan large format souvenir sheet issued on 15 September 1962. The sheet features a scene from his starring role as "Drunken Concubine", surrounded by a white and blue decorated background. 20,000 were issued but sold relatively poorly as the price at the time was comparatively high by Chinese standards. Allegedly remaining unsold stocks were destroyed at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution meaning the number of surviving examples is much less. Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £11,000. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value looks to be behind current market realisations. In recent months, we have noted unmounted mint examples of varying quality sell in the European market at prices between 8,900 and 18,000 euros, plus commission fees of between 25% and 30%.

581 imageChina 1962 People's Republic China general issues Stage Art of Mei Lan-fang 3 yuan "Drunken Beauty" miniature sheet, SGMS2044a. A very fine unmounted mint, with full original gum, example. Many examples seen have certain condition issues. A modern People's Republic of China classic, highly sought after by collectors of modern Chinese stamps, and rare as only 20,000 were issued. 582 imageChina 1962 People's Republic China Stage Art of Mei Lan-fang imperforate set of eight to 50f, SG2037i/44i. A fine IMPERFORATE set cancelled to order (c.t.o.) used set, all with good margins. Only 10,000 sets were issued, and the imperforates are more often seen unused, making used sets particularly scarce. A highly desirable cultural issue of the People's Republic of China. The famous 1962 “Stage Art of Mei Lan-fang” set was issued to honour the Peking-opera master Mei Lan-fang (1894–1961). Mei Lan-fang was the 20th-century global ambassador of Peking opera, touring the U.S. and Europe and refusing to perform for Japanese occupiers during World War II, hence his iconic status on this issue. A very scarce and popular issue. Chairman Mao regularly, at this time, used stamps as a form of propaganda. Chairman Mao was the first Chairman of the Communist Party and leader of the People's Republic of China for nearly 30 years. He started writing poetry in the 1920s, during the Red Army's epic retreat during the Long March of 1934-36 and after coming to power in 1949. His poems are generally considered well-written and of high literary quality. He is considered to be a romantic poet, with many of Mao's poems being frequently quoted in popular culture.  Cyprus 1879 (AU 8) printed "On Her Majesty's Service" envelope (with embossed Royal arms on flap), addressed to "Somerset French Esqre, British Postmaster, Larnaca", franked by GB 1878-80 1d rose-red plate 218, with small corner fault.

Tied by "969" numeral with NICOSIA despatch circular date stamp alongside and LARNACA arrival backstamp for the same date.

A rare and important 1d inland rate cover, exceptionally neat and clean. The "969" numeral postmark, used in Nicosia, is particularly important as it was the only one used which was not similar to those which had previously been used at post offices in Great Britain.

A similar cover from the Cruttwell collection realised £2,700 + premium (Argyll Etkin 9/03/07, lot 1113).

Great Britain assumed the administration of Cyprus on 11 July 1878. The stamps of Great Britain at the time were supplied to the various post offices as they opened. British stamps continued to be used until the Cyprus administration assumed responsibility for the postal service on 1 April 1880.

A fine mint block of four with original gum and with very fresh colour. Minor gum creasing and insignificant traces of gum toning mentioned for accuracy only, as a fine and rare block.
