A fine used set, each in a block of 4 cancelled-to-order used by native Taipei circular date stamps for 21.10 (3s and 5s) 31.10 (10s). Fine examples of the first day usage, scarce as these were in use for only a few days before the reversion to Chinese rule. Quite exceptional as blocks of four. Stamps were printed in Taipeh when supplies run short. SG Catalogue Value: £1,200+.

A fine unused lower marginal vertical pair, with printing variety imperforate between stamp and margin. Most appealing quality other than slight tone in margin. A scarce printing variety, quite remarkably still available at a low price. Chan catalogue No: 1032c. 566 imageChina 1948 (7 Nov) Port Arthur 31st Anniversary of Russian October Revolution set of 3 to $100 on 4f yellow-olive, SGNE45/7. A very fine and fresh unmounted mint, with full original gum, set. A set which is rarely seen so fine. This set was issued on the 7th November 1948 - 31st Anniversary of the October (1917) Revolution in Petrograd which paved the way for the Communist "Soviet" government which came into power in 1922. Soviet forces entered into the former Kwantung Leased Territory shortly after the Japanese surrender of 18th August 1945 and postal services were suspended for six months. A limited service was resumed, in larger post offices only, on 18th March 1946. The Russians quickly established links to the local communist areas and gradually this increased to all communist held areas in China. Until 1949 there were no postal links to any non-communist country outside of China. The Soviets shared control of Port Arthur with the Chinese Communists from August 1945 to May 1950, they controlled the financial matters of the city. The Soviet banknotes for the Kwantung Bank (Luda zone) where designed and printed by the Russians so they are very European in style, all other financial material was Russian supervised. SG Catalogue Value: £1,700.

Between March and April 1949 inflation of the Gold Yuan currency became so rapid that it was no longer possible to print stamps to keep pace with it. Stamps were therefore produced to be sold at the rate of the day for the service indicated, referred to as "Unit" stamps. Owing to the collapse of the central administration in face of the advance of the Communist armies, stamps were overprinted by the local administrations temporary labels were also used. This vivid and colourful set ranges from 1c green to 500c scarlet, showcasing a variety of hues and values. Notably, the two higher denominations – the 100c deep blue and 500c scarlet – are particularly scarce and seldom seen in such well-preserved condition. A classic representation of the final phase of Nationalist Chinese issues before currency revaluation and one of the key Sun Yat-sen commemorative designs for collectors of Chinese Republican philately.
