A striking high-value Seahorse issue from the De La Rue printing.
A very fine and fresh top right-hand corner marginal example, unmounted mint, with full original gum, of the 1915 5 shillings bright carmine Seahorses issue, featuring well-centred margins. Printed by De La Rue, this issue is celebrated for its bold
engraving and classical design.
The Seahorse stamps were in circulation longer than any other British high value stamp: 26 years between 1913 and 1939.
They truly define King George V’s monarchy in one simple picture.
The intricacy of the design is the credit of the renowned Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal. The most famous stamp collector at the time (King George V) personally approved the designs.
They are beautifully engraved, being produced by the intaglio recess printing method. This meant they were of higher quality than most stamps before and after. You can really feel the engraved lines indented into the paper.

The British Empire Exhibition was a hugely ambitious colonial exhibition to raise the country's spirits after the First World War. It opened at Wembley in 1924 and ran for two summer seasons showcasing goods and produce from the Empire countries and
attracted 27 million visitors.
To mark the opening of the Exhibition in 1924, the British Post Office issued two commemorative stamps, the 1d scarlet and the 1½d brown. As the stamps proved so popular, they were re-issued the following year when the exhibition reopened for the
second summer.
The design remains one of the most iconic and attractive of Britain's stamp issues amongst collectors. The designs were produced by the artist, Harold Nelson who was also responsible for the design of the 1929 PUC £1 stamp, now considered Britain's
greatest ever stamp design.
