197 imageGreat Britain 1884 £1 brown-Lilac (Watermark Three Crowns), SG185. A very fine unused with original gum example, lettered 'EC', with large part original usual “off-white” gum and a fresh vibrant colour. A beautiful example of this very rare high value Queen Victorian surface printed classic rarity. The £1 brown-lilac stamp is a heavyweight of British philately. The Long One Pound stamp is a stunning feature of Great Britain’s postal history. They are widely adored amongst collectors, but outside the financial reach of many because they are so rare and valuable. The unique horizontal format caused a great stir at the time when it was first issued in 1884. These surface-printed stamps were produced by the printers, Thomas De La Rue. It has an ornate style with corner letters which are different for each stamp in the sheet, typical of the stamps in the reign, to deter forgers. The £1 brown-lilac was only in circulation for a very short time in 1884 as it was soon re-issued in a green colour. It is an elusive stamp missing in most collections and thus highly desirable, particularly in mint quality condition. Provenance: Ex “Vaduz”, King Carol of Romania. Accompanied by a 2012 British Philatelic Association (BPA) Certificate of Authenticity. SG catalogue value: £18,000.

206 imageGreat Britain 1884 2½d “Jubilee” Essay, SG201var – Unique Hand-Painted Essay on Card A spectacular and unique hand-painted essay for the proposed 1884 2½d Jubilee issue, executed in slate lilac and affixed to a small piece of white card (31 x 27mm). This striking design is part of the earliest group of essays submitted before the design committee had issued formal guidelines. The stamp features Queen Victoria in profile surrounded by ornamental floral borders, inscribed 'POSTAGE & REVENUE'. The essay represents an important moment in the evolution of British stamp design, bridging the Victorian aesthetic with the emerging stylisation of the Jubilee series that would define the latter 19th century. An exceptional and unique piece. SG Catalogue Value: £8,500.

207 imageGreat Britain 1885 5s rose on blued paper (I.R.Official), SG08. A very fine and fresh unused with original gum example of this rare departmental issue lettered 'EA'. Provenance: Ex. "Kay-Jay" and Bill Gross. Accompanied with a 1922 Royal Philatelic Society (RPS) certificate and a 1997 British Philatelic Association (BPA) certificate. These Inland Revenue stamps were used solely by revenue officials in the provinces. Mail to and from Head Office passed without a stamp. The London Office used these stamps only for foreign mail. One of the most desirable of all the Victorian government official overprints, especially in such clean and well-centred condition. Was previously sold by Stanley Gibbons in 2015 for £17,000. In our view, its current catalogue value does not do its extreme rarity in catalogue quality fair justice. SG catalogue value: £6,500.

214 imageGreat Britain 1887 5d dull purple & blue "Jubilee" (Die 1), SG207. A superb unused, with original gum, very lightly mounted block of four. Wonderful fresh colour and gum. A very scarce block in such fine quality. The Jubilee stamps were issued at the end of Queen Victoria’s reign between 1887 and 1900. The fact they became known as the “Jubilee issue” coinciding with the Queen’s Jubilee was fortuitous as the set was planned to be issued from 1884. However, this was delayed until the first issue came out on 1 January 1887, the year of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The previous stamps in issue were the 1883-4 lilac and green series. These did not appeal to the public due to the colours being so dull. There were several different denominations at the time of the same colour and similar in design. This frustrated post office workers as postmarks regularly covered the denomination making it difficult to establish if the correct denomination stamp had been used. This led to a decision to replace these issues with new issues of different colour for each denomination. Some were printed in two colours and represented the first ever British bi-coloured stamps. In terms of the conservative nature of stamp designs at the time, this was a major break from tradition. They quickly became popular with the public being more modern in design and colourful. Today, they continue to capture the hearts of stamps collectors. SG catalogue value: £2,000+.
