Dr W.H. Perkin was the aniline-dye pioneer chemically treating the paper on stamps to make cancellations fugitive (ie. to deter cleaning for re-use). The treatment gave the sheet a slight blue cast. Only a few sheets were printed for trials.
The paper used was thin and often shows gums creases and wrinkles making genuine fresh multiples incredibly scarce.
The trials were conducted between 1870-71 as experiments only and were not issued for postal use, meaning they are classified as proofs/trials, not regular stamps.
