Brilliant mint example with original gum. Couple of slightly shortish perforations and a tiny natural inclusion mentioned for accuracy, but a lovely fresh example of this rarity. When the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force occupied German New Guinea in 1914, it overprinted existing stocks of the German New Guinea Marshall Islands stamps with the initials "G.R.I." (Georgius Rex Imperator), referring to King George V. They were only used for a short period of time and are, therefore, very rare and most surviving examples have condition flaws. Accompanied with a clear Royal Philatelic Society (RPS) certificate of authenticity (1987). The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £4,000. (Image)

229 imageNew Zealand 1899-1903 2s blue green variety, SG269a varNew Zealand 1899-1903 2s blue-green, LAID PAPER, perforations 11, clearly showing the marked Campbell Paterson listed R6/10 re-entry (at right), SG269a var. A fine, fresh and well-centred mint example with large part original gum. A rare printing variety on this paper. Provenance: Ex Michael Burberry, with his enlarged drawing. New Zealand Campbell Paterson Catalogue Number: CP EV20d. One of the most attractive designs from what was the first pictorial series from a major British colony. The design of Milford Sound is home to some of the most impressive waterfalls on earth. It was customary at this time for the monarch’s head to form the basis of most stamp designs. As such, this first pictorial definitive series, issued in 1898, caught the public’s attention. The designs stemmed from a public design competition launched in 1895, offering cash prizes for the best designs. This approach was to support the government policy of encouraging new settlers and promoting tourism at that time. The superb engraved views of New Zealand’s scenery, with Mountains and water proving the most popular subjects among the competition winners, captured the imagination of the Victorians at the time and have remained ever-popular with collectors as they were ground-breaking at the time. A fine used example with circular date stamp. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £50. The first printing of this stamp on 1 January 1901 represented the introduction of a one penny universal postage rate for New Zealand. However, the United States, France and Germany refused to take them as they considered the rate too low. Contrary to such fears, the New Zealand Post Office saw an increase in mail volume to an extent which offset the loss of revenue from the lower rate. (Image)

A very fine used pair with large part "CHELTENHAM" circular date stamp. A scarce variety, particularly so as a multiple. An attractive pictorial stamp issue depicting the stunning White Terrace, Rotomahana also known as "the fountain of the clouded sky". The White Terraces were formed over thousands of years by a geyser, which had played over the mountain slope leaving deposits of silica. They were a world famous tourist attraction by 1886, when the eruption of nearby Mount Tarawera completely obliterated them. All that remains are sketches, paintings and these wonderful stamps.
