179 imageMALAYA JAPANESE OCCUPATION 1943 Johore Postage Due 10c brown, SGJD9aMalaya Japanese Occupation 1943 Johore Postage Due 10c brown, type 2 'Kanji' overprint showing variety 'Second character sideways' (R6/3), SGJD9a. A splendid unmounted mint example with full original gum. Some gum toning as is often the case with stamps from this part of the world, although still of fine fresh appearance. An extremely scarce and curious variety. Malaya was gradually occupied by the Japanese between 8 December 1941 and the Allied surrender at Singapore on 16 February 1942. The Japanese remained in occupation until their surrender to the Allies in 1945. The postal service in Johore was reconstituted in mid-April 1942. These overprinted stamps were only used for fiscal purposes. Overprinted Johore postage due stamps were not issued for use elsewhere in Malaya. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £450. (Image)

A pristine and very fine unmounted mint example with full original gum. A spectacular error of missing colour with both the all-important value being omitted along with the green leaves. A stunning unmounted mint positional block with full original gum and vibrant colour. A very scarce item in this highly attractive positional form. The stamp features Sultan Sir Abu Baker, known as a friendly and approachable ruler by his subjects. These stamps were printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company, London. A Post Office fresh unmounted mint positional block with full original gum. A spectacular piece and a most unusual printing variety, being the first we have ever encountered. As this is classified as a printing variety rather than an error, it is valued at a considerably lower level irrespective of its rarity. Errors of missing colour for this stamp issue are valued in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue at £1,400-£1,600. (Image)

A fine mint example with original gum. Some minor trace of rubbing and offsetting on reverse as usually found and still fine and attractive with fresh colours. A spectacular and rare stamp with the double overprint error. Only around 40 examples are believed to have originally existed, most of which were used. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £700. This fine stamp depicting the “roaring tiger” provides a perfect example of why stamps from the Malaya States are one of the most popular areas of collecting in the British Commonwealth. The designs were unique to this area of philately, with high quality production. (Image)

This is the first printing on thin surfaced paper in a splendid block of 4, unmounted mint with full original gum. One stamp with tiny inclusion, still in lovely condition. A very attractive block of the first stamp issues from Malta issued for local mail and rarely seen in such fine quality. The only stamps from Malta issued between 1860 and 1885 were the ½d denomination. They were all printed in various shades of buff and on papers with various watermarks. Because of this, stamps from Great Britain were used concurrently with the Maltese stamps during this time period. (Image)

188 imageMALTA 1922 'SELF-GOVERNMENT' 2s purple and blue/blue, SG111Malta 1922 'SELF-GOVERNMENT' 2s purple and blue/blue, watermark MCA, SG111. A fresh mint example with large part original gum. In 1922, stamps from Malta experienced an evolution , due to the new self-governing status of the crown colony. During 1921, Malta was granted a new constitution and self-government status within the British Empire. It was still a crown colony, with their defense and foreign affairs directed by Great Britain, and the British sovereign, represented in Malta by the Governor General, who was still the head-of-state. However, within the colony, the Maltese people and their elected representatives were now able to manage all internal civil and political affairs. To celebrate this new autonomy, Malta overprinted all their current postage stamps and a new series of definitive postage stamps were designed and issued. A rare and important stamp issue from Malta. Only 3,240 were issued. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £250. (Image)

A fine mint positional block of four with original gum. Some faint surface marks, which are mainly in the margin and the normal stamps are all unmounted mint. A scarce positional multiple of this King George VI issue, particularly with the printing variety present, which is catalogued alone at £400. Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £490+. Between 1933 and 1946, the constitution of Malta was suspended returning to British rule as a crown colony. This was because of the important of Malta to the Allied nations during World War II. The British Mediterranean Fleet was headquartered there early in the war. The Allied invasion of Sicily was launched from Malta. Prior to the Yalta Conference, Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin had met in Malta to begin discussions on the post-war division of Europe. In 1947, a new constitution was implemented and internal self-government in Malta was re-established. So, yet again, during 1948 Malta stamps celebrated the resumption of internal self-government in the colony. This resulted in all the definitive stamps of King George VI being overprinted in celebration of the colony's new political status. (Image)
