A very fine and fresh mint example with original gum. A scarce variety in lovely condition. The King George V stamps of Nyasaland are particularly interesting to collectors because of the wide range of constant printing plate flaws which exist. Great Britain declared ‘British Central Africa’ a protectorate in 1891 and started to issue postage stamps. In 1908, the Protectorate was renamed ‘Nyasaland’, and in 1953 it joined the postal territory of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Stamps were issued from Nyasaland again In 1963 when it became an autonomous area, followed by Independence (as ‘Malaw^i’) on 6 July 1964. (Image)

A very fine 'CRISTOBAL CANAL ZONE' machine transit date stamp on reverse. Typical slight cover faults but a rare and highly unusual 'late' use of this cachet (clearly after 1/1/25 !). The arrangement of letters being sent without postage stamps was ended in 1926. A very interesting and philatelically important piece of early postal history from the Pitcairn Islands. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £2,500+. The mail service from the Pitcairn Islands was irregular because it depended on passing ships and mail from the island was often sent via Tahiti. In 1920, a regular mail service was introduced. As there were no stamps available, letters were allowed free postage as long as they carried a cachet, or manuscript endorsement, indicating their origin. (Image)

Backstamped with despatch and arrival (DE 17) datestamps, the former under-inked resulting in an almost complete albino impression, SG1d. A very important unique cover of the highest rarity, being THE ONLY RECORDED FIRST ISSUE DIE II ON COVER. Some minor faults to be expected of a cover of this age, but overall a fine quality early piece of postal history. Provenance: Ex Alan Griffiths (Spink 11 Apr 2012, lot 728). V.G. Accompanied with a Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation certificate of authenticity (2003) as Scott 1 variety. Prince Edward Island was previously administered as part of Novia Scotia until it became a separate colony in 1769. (Image)

A fine used example with a particularly attractive circular date stamp. There are a few shortish perforations at the foot of the stamp, but it is still far above average for this scarce stamp. A very attractive stamp issue featuring Queen Mary and King George V. Accompanied with a Brandon certificate of authenticity (1982). The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £300. Rhodesia, named after Cecil Rhodes, the founder of the British South Africa Company, joined the South African Postal Union on 1 August 1892. At this point, its stamps became valid for international mail. The stamps issued throughout 1890-1923 are all inscribed "British South Africa Company". (Image)

A fine unmounted mint example with full original gum. Minor natural gum disturbances, which do not detract in any way from overall fine quality. A dramatic error with the missing carmine-red colour resulting in the omission of the central design of a VHF mast. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £200. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, also known as the Central African Federation (CAF), was a semi-independent state in southern Africa that existed from 1953 to the end of 1963. The state included the former self-governing (since 1923) Colony of Southern Rhodesia and the British protectorates of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Federation officially ended on 31 December 1963, when Northern Rhodesia gained independence from the United Kingdom. (Image)

Society, Sydney', with 'SHIP-LETTER/SYDNEY' arrival circular date stamp (MR 9 18(4)8) on upper flap, which would open for display. Rated '1/-', with interesting sender's endorsement on face panel 'If Mr Nisbet has left please forward to L.M.S. Mission House ...... London', which clearly proved an unnecessary precaution. The fascinating contents make reference to the difficulties of communications (with the charming comment 'The Post Office folks are our best friends after all') and describe recent missionary activity in Samoa. A desirable early letter between two important figures in the development of Samoa. Postal history at its finest. (Image)

Very fine mint imperforate pair with large part original gum and lovely appearance. A rare imperforated error, particularly so in such splendid condition. The "Palms" design was first issued in 1886, printed by the New Zealand Government Printer for John Davis, a photographer from Apia. He supposedly was appointed by King Malietoa, and was supported by the Americans and the British. It was also under his watch that the Express stamps were issued. His post office was never recognised by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), so some consider these "Kingdom" issues to be "local". His postal service ceased when the German Imperial Government Post Office opened on March 1, 1900. (Image)

A fine unmounted mint positional block of four with full original gum. Much fresher than usually found, and rare in this positional form. This stamp comes from the first King George VI set issued by the Seychelles and deviated from the tradition of previous stamps which merely portrayed the British monarch. Furthermore, the traditional use of the words "POSTAGE" were not included in this issue. Instead, the first set of stamps issued for King George VI's reign provided vivid photographic vignettes of home. This marked the beginning of a new preference for pictorial stamps and the golden era of wonderful stamp designs, bringing the world to life. (Image)
