268 imageNew Zealand 1926-34 2s deep blue variety, SG466wNew Zealand 1926-34 2s deep blue, "Jones" paper, watermark inverted, SG466w. A lovely fresh and fine mint example with large part original gum. Natural perforation comb irregularity at top. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £65. H L Richardson was asked to prepare a design similar to the 2s and 3s stamps that depicted King George V as an Admiral of the Fleet. It was recommended, however, that as General Sir Charles Fergusson - a distinguished soldier, had succeeded Viscount Jellicoe as Governor-General, it would be appropriate to depict the King in the uniform of a Field Marshall. The design was engraved by Waterlow and Sons, London. The stamp was in production from 1926-1935. (Image)

New Zealand 1930 1d + 1d scarlet "Nurse", SG545
Lot Symbol Descrip Opening
270 imageNew Zealand 1930 1d + 1d scarlet "Nurse", SG545New Zealand 1930 1d + 1d scarlet "Nurse", inscribed "HELP PROMOTE HEALTH", SG545. A well-centred block of 4, neatly cancelled by complete and part strikes of WELLINGTON registered circular date stamps, dated "18 AP 31". An attractive and uncommon multiple. Owing to pressure of work being experienced by the plate makers in England there was insufficient time to produce printing plates for the new stamp design for this 1930 issue. The only alternative was to prepare a plate with a similar design to the 1929 issue in New Zealand. Accordingly the Government Printer was instructed to prepare a plate with a similar design but with a new slogan ‘Help Promote Health’. The original 1929 design had been completed by staff of the Government Printing Office who designed the frame for the stamp, the nurse image having been drawn by L C Mitchell. The proceeds of the 'Charity' value of the 1930 Health stamps was donated to Children's Health Camps movement. (Image)

The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £475. A most appealing stamp issue from Newfoundland, the Province of Canada. The highest value denomination in the set being reserved to pay homage to the current reign at the time, King George V. A stunning quality mint pair with large margins and original gum. Most particularly benefiting from brilliant colour. Minor ink marks on reverse of right hand stamp do not affect lovely appearance. The first stamp issues of Newfoundland, after becoming self-governing in 1855, are considered classics of the British Empire with the Royal Crown and Heraldic flowers of Great Britain paying homage to the British Crown.
