1900: Reichspost issue 1-5 Mark from the very rare first experimental printing with wide 11 1/2 perforation and in slightly different colors, the 5 Mark value being the most spectacular as it shows a completly different design from the issued version. These rare stamps were used on four insured letters all from 1902 and franked according to the correct postal rates and sent from Heidelberg or Frankfurt (Main) to Ludwigshafen. The frankings are in fresh and extremely fine condition and the envelopes are also in a pristine state of conservation. As usual the reverse wax seals have been removed. Each of the four high values is unique in used condition and as such belongs to the major rarities of German philately. Certifications: the covers are signed on the reverse by Ernst Stock and have Dr. Oechsner BPP (1997) and Jäschke-Lantelme BPP (2018) certificates. Note: Like the 1900 Germania Reichspost Pfennig issues, the Mark values were printed before their official introduction in an experimental form differing from the later mass-produced stamps. The main difference lay in the perforation. In contrast to the later comb perforation of 14¼, the very small first print run of the 1, 2, 3, and 5 mark values had a wide line perforation of 11½. These stamps are sought-after rarities in mint condition, in used condition only these four examples are known. It is likely that the wide perforation, as well as the well-known bold inscription of the Germania first Pfennig issue, was used as a feature for immediate protection against counterfeiting (see also Michael Jäschke-Lantelme: 100 Jahre Germania, Dessau 1999; pp. 14ff.). Any forgeries with wider perforations would have been immediately noticeable, as the final stamps showed the fine perforation. It is interesting to note that as the 5 Mark belongs to the famous “Vortype“ that only exists as “Erstdruck”, there is a high probability that all the four Mark values belong to the same extremely rare “Erstdrucke” and not to the “Nachauflage” making them even more valuable, as these are except for the 5 Mark not priced in Michel. The senders/recipients of the letters were the chemists Dr. Richard Laiblin and Emil Kromm, who were evidently employed at BASF in Ludwigshafen. Provenance: Offered individually at the 292nd Heinrich Köhler Rarities Auction (February 1997), as lots 592 to 595. Michel 63B, 64IB, 65IIB, 66BP

Egypt — Extraordinary Collection of Essays, Proofs and Experimental Issues, 1864–1875 A remarkable and highly important collection of Egyptian essays, proofs, vignette studies and experimental stamp productions, representing many of the pioneering printers involved in the earliest development of Egyptian philately. This exceptional offering includes essays and proofs by Penasson of Alexandria, National Bank Note Co., Continental Bank Note Co., Charles Skipper & East, Riester, Renard, Prevost and the Khedivial Printing Works at Boulac, with many unique or near-unique multiples, se-tenant sheetlets, imprint pieces and exhibition-quality showpieces. Highlights include: • 1864 Posta Europea Essays — complete set of four comprising 10pa buff, 20pa dark blue, 30pa green and 1pi white, extremely rare with only three complete sets recorded. Penasson Essays — important imperforate die proof set in black recess printing, comprising 10pa, 1pi and two 2pi designs with corner guidelines; apparently unique and pulled from the original steel dies. • 1867 V. Penasson Essays — extensive series of imperforate se-tenant sheetlets of four in violet, red, green, brown, orange and blue, on both gummed and ungummed papers, each showing 10pa, 1pi and two 2pi essays in varying arrangements; faults typical of these fragile essays including wrinkles, thins and creases, but all highly attractive and very rare. • 1869 Renard, Paris — 20pa green imperforate essay with black overprint on card, very fine and scarce. • 1870 Riester, Paris — 20pa rose with green overprint, block of four in miniature sheet format, very fine and scarce. • 1870 Riester, Paris — 20pa light ochre imperforate miniature sheet of four with two differing designs, all overprinted in red, very fine and scarce. • 1871 Charles Skipper & East, London — 2pi black imperforate miniature sheet showing two different figure “2” types, very fine and rare. • 1871 Penasson — 1pi blue, imperforate horizontally and perforated 12½ vertically, mint and mint never hinged bottom sheet marginal block of twelve; minor gum bends and light toning, very fine and a spectacular rare multiple. • 1874 Continental Bank Note Co., New York — Sphinx and Pyramid 20pa in blue and green with black overprint, very fine and scarce. • 1874 Continental Bank Note Co., New York — Pyramid 20pa in black and brown with black overprint, very fine and scarce. • Essay of the Khedivial Printing Works at Boulac — 10pa surcharge essay in black on 2½pi grey-violet, one of the rarest and most elusive essays in all Egyptian philately. • 1875 V. Penasson, Alexandria — Universal Postal Union essays including 60pa yellow-green with watermark and globe design inscribed “UNIONE POSTALE EGITTO”, imperforate, very fine and rare. • 1875 V. Penasson, Alexandria — 60pa rose-red “Sessanta Para” essay with Arabic inscription, imperforate, very fine and very rare. • Essay by unknown printer — typographed 1pi red imperforate mosque design in sheetlet format, very fine and rare. An extraordinary specialised collection of museum calibre, offering a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most comprehensive groups of classic Egyptian essays and proofs to appear on the market. The Joe Chalhoub Collection of Suez Canal An extraordinary and highly important collection of the stamps and postal history of the Suez Canal, representing one of the finest and most comprehensive assemblies ever formed of this iconic and historically significant subject. The collection combines outstanding rarity, exceptional provenance, and remarkable historical importance throughout. Among the many highlights is the rare 1869 commemorative silver medal issued for the opening of the canal, together with two important historical documents, including a handwritten letter by Ferdinand de Lesseps on Consular stationery referring to the printed notice “Avis au Public”, both dated 1837. The philatelic section commences with the celebrated 1868 Suez Canal issues, including a complete mint set of the four values from 1c to 40c in blocks of four, together with an exceptionally rare used set of singles, formerly in the Royal Collection. Further major multiples include the 1c black in a magnificent block of sixteen from the renowned Antonini collection, the 5c green in an impressive block of thirty, believed to be among the largest recorded, the 20c blue in a complete sheet, and the 40c red in a superb block of twenty, likewise believed to be one of the largest surviving multiples. The collection further contains a specialised group of rare watermark varieties. Postal history is equally impressive and includes an important 1868 cover bearing the 20c blue from Port Said to Kantara, formerly in the famous Chaftar and Byam collections, one of the key usages of the issue. The final section is devoted to the fascinating usages of the Egyptian 1867 Pennasson Issue along the Suez Canal route, comprising a remarkable range of single stamps with cancellations from the canal post offices, including Port Said, Kantara, El Gisr (including a rare manuscript cancel), Chantier VI on a 10pa strip of four, and the unique combination franking with Austrian Lloyd 15s and two Egypt 1867 20pa green from Chantier VI. The Ismailia section includes ten stamps, a stampless cover, and two further covers, one showing the 1867 Egypt 1pi in combination with French issues, and another being the famous combination usage of Egypt 1pi together with the Suez Canal 20c blue. The collection concludes with further selections cancelled at Serapeum and Chaluf-el-Tarraba. A truly spectacular and historically important collection of immense rarity and significance, documenting the postal operations and development of one of the greatest engineering achievements of the nineteenth century. An exhibition calibre assembly of the highest order.

The Joe Chalhoub Collection of the Revenue Stamps of Egypt This is, without doubt, the most comprehensive collection of the Revenue stamps of Egypt ever formed. The largest part of the collection was built by Peter Feltus, who wrote the definitive work on the subject, "Catalogue of Egyptian Revenue Stamps", published in 1982. However, Joe Chalhoub has added several items including artists’ drawings, essays and panes of oblique perforations of the 1st “Egyptian Tax” issue. to the collection over the last twenty or more years. This vast study and lifetimes work of Peter Feltus and latterly Joe Chalhoub shows much of the following throughout with handpainted essays in both stamp size and enlarged artworks; essays included those mounted on card and those in complete sheetlets, photographic essays, die proofs Before and After Hardening, die proofs of frame only and centre only, colour trials, mint and used, with singles, complete sets, multiples with control number blocks, gutter blocks, complete sheets, a wealth of varieties with some imperforate blocks, double perforations, imperf. between pairs and much more, extensively used ranges with a plethora of Revenue cancels, plus many different usages on complete documents. The collection is replete with unique items, many of which originated from the Royal collection, of course, including the Royal Cancelled on reverse, the Royal imperforate & the Royal misperforations, many of which are present in their very rare control number blocks. The collection itself is divided into two clearly defined parts. Part One: The General Revenue and Revenue Stamped Paper is followed by Salt Tax Stamps, the Cigarette and Match and Playing Card Tax Stamps; these are for excise taxes collected by the Ministry of Finance and Customs Administration. Egyptian General Stamps overprinted for use in Palestine also form an integral part of the collection. Continuing with Consular Service stamps, Airport Tax stamps, Savings Bank stamps, plus an array of miscellaneous revenues. Part Two: This somewhat more modern section shows Arab Socialist Union Stamps, followed by Professional Syndicate and Union Stamps, of which many are shown from Accountants & Auditors, Agricultural Professions, The arts, Law Courts, Education, Engineering, Medical, Nursing, Science, Social, Performing and the Writers Union, plus finally Petrol Ration Stamps. The collection is very extensive and is housed in 2 albums and a binder 15 x 20 inches and presented on many hundreds of pages. The collection also includes a Palace folder of Oil Bonds 1940-1949. This folder contains the various issues of Bonds for the distribution of oil in Cairo and the provinces(568 Bonds of various denominations affixed to 14 sheets, from the first issue dated May 27, 1940, to the 105th issue on May 1, 1949). In addition unused and used Revenue Stamped Papers. The overview of the depth and richness of the collection is unparalleled. The David Feldman series of Great Philatelic Collections entitled simply "Egypt Volume XI Revenue Stamps" provides detailed descriptions, high-quality images, and expert analysis of the revenue stamps of Egypt, making it an essential reference for collectors and philatelists. The book not only highlights key rarities but also offers historical context, shedding light on the development and usage of these fascinating issues, the over 344 pages gives any potential buyer a magnificent window into the extent of this outstanding collection. The book covers the majority but not the entire collection.

1917 Definitive Issues – An Exceptional Specialised Collection: An exceedingly fine, comprehensive and beautifully presented collection, mounted on large exhibition pages and offering an extraordinary array of essays, proofs, original artwork, major multiples, varieties and postal history. The collection opens with the basic definitive set, followed by the unique ½c and 2c hand-painted composite essays, each with Perkins Bacon cachet on reverse, and two remarkable September 1912 photographic essay sheets, each showing fifteen values including several unissued designs, the only two examples recorded. Further important material includes imperforate colour proofs on card, incorporating unissued designs and colours; a Perkins Bacon presentation piece showing three values in unissued colours alongside issues of other countries; an unadopted 40c Coffee Pickers proof; an undenominated black proof in the design of the 4c Registration stamp but in a smaller format; and two unissued Airmail design bromides. Of particular significance is the remarkable representation of the individual definitive values, each accompanied by an original photograph or drawing from which Perkins Bacon developed the final design, together with intermediate and final proofs in various colours. Also present are black imperforate proofs in substantial multiples, many believed to be the largest recorded, including complete sheets of fifty of the 1p and 5p; SPECIMEN examples; and an extensive range of covers illustrating the postal use of each denomination. Among the major rarities is a complete perforated sheet of fifty of the 10p, the only recorded example, together with parcel cards bearing single and pair frankings of the 10p and a remarkable judicial correspondence bearing the 10p in combination with other issues. The Registration stamps are similarly outstanding, including a 4c pencil-drawn proof with additional detail on an overlay, separate frame and centre proofs, a block of eighteen blue 4c centres, the largest known multiple, an issued block of twenty-five showing imperforate between stamps and upper margin, and a mint block of four with inverted centre, the only recorded multiple. The 10c Waterfall section includes a hand-drawn layout, proofs in various colours, a unique partially inked violet proof block, a unique perforated proof pair, and a spectacular 1930 parcel card franked with a block of twelve. The Acknowledgement of Receipt issues include 4c proofs with a unique undenominated black proof, various 5c proofs, a complete imperforate colour-proof sheet of fifty, and two A.R. receipts bearing single frankings. The Special Delivery Postman issue is represented by a frame proof with the centre added by hand, black and green proofs, an unadopted design by Litografía Nacional, a complete sheet of fifty, and a block of twenty with R de C punch holes, together with 1924 Barranquilla city mail and a 1925 Bogotá–Manizales stationery envelope uprated with the issue. The collection concludes with the complete sets overprinted OFICIO and COLONIAS. A truly exceptional and remarkably thorough specialised collection, combining unique archival material, original source artwork, major recorded multiples, important varieties and significant postal history. An outstanding assembly that must be viewed to be fully appreciated. Note: Please see a complete set of pdf scans online!

LARGE LOTS AND COLLECTIONS UNITED STATES 1847-2008 collection of used and unused in seven DAVO hingeless albums, plus some custom pages, beginning with an 1847 5c dark brown (1a) pair on cover from Utica, also a used single, 1851-68 Issues, 1869 Pictorials including 24c, Bank Note Issues and used 1898 $1 Trans-Mississippi. Early 20th century onward, mostly unused, with 1901 Pan-Americans, Washington-Franklins and later issues, including 1914 30c (439) n.h., with 2007 PFC and 1928 2c Type II (634A) n.h. with 2011 APS certificate, mostly complete from 1940 on, with sheets, coils, etc. Back of book areas include complete unused Air Post (C1-6 and C13-15, also on covers), range of Special Delivery and Postage Dues, Newspaper stamps (facsimiles), used and unused Officials. In addition, there are more than 500 different EFOs, beginning with a dramatically misperforated 1863 2c Jackson and continuing with missing colors, striking misperforations and other production errors through the Washington-Franklin Issues and into the 1990s. The collector thoughtfully included a corresponding normal stamp alongside each EFO for comparison. An extensive and highly unusual collection combining a broad U.S. general collection with a substantial specialized EFO holding, with 25+ certificates accompanying; viewing the online video of the full collection on our website is strongly recommended

1854-59, Perkins Bacon archive sheet of 20 proof examples of the Garter 6d value, all showing waxed corners to avoid re-usage, arranged on the sheet in 4 vertical rows of 5 each in four different colours, except the 1st horizontal row all other 4 rows showing treatment with different chemicals to see if obliterations could be removed, each of the chemical treated proofs with manuscript 'Fisher'. The Royal Post office (and Rowland Hill) were nearly obsessed with the idea of possible Postal Fraud (which included removal of ink and postmarks). Being a British Commonwealth rarity this proof sheet would serve as an important addition to a specialised NSW exhibit collection resp. Commonwealth collection. Note: similar NSW Perkins proof sheets (of usually 5 proofs each) fetched in recent auctions over the last years always around 3000-4000 GBP/€/CHF Provenance: E. R. Slade Slade, Harmers of London, 3-4th April, 1979.
