788 CVR J7 image1928 South Africa 1/- Postage Due on registered cover, Germiston (Transvaal). Local cover to Germiston bearing the Union of South Africa 1/- black & carmine Postage Due, tied by GERMISTON / 15 OCT 28 c.d.s.; boxed bilingual “MORE TO PAY / MEER TE BETAAL” tax marking with manuscript notation. Sent unstamped and posted in a pillar box rather than over the counter, it was marked “Posted Out of Course.” At the time the letter rate was 1d per oz.; the cover exceeded 1 oz (2d due) and the 4d registration fee was also unpaid. Both deficiencies were doubled under due-fee regulations (2d ×2 = 4d; 4d ×2 = 8d; total 12d = 1/-), hence the high-value due. The 1/- postage due saw very limited commercial use domestically and is rarely seen genuinely tied on cover; most recorded examples are contrived or philatelic. This late usage (on the 1914–22 issue still valid in 1928) is a fine and very scarce high-value due franking—especially desirable addressed to a famous philatelist Dr. Alec Kaplan. Some edge wear/soiling as expected; otherwise fine and attractive (Image 1)
