510 CVR   image1838 (August 10), disinfected folded letter from Constantinople via the Austrian Post in Turkey to Le Havre, redirected to New York, posted through the Austrian Post in the Levant with small black “A.T.” marking and faint straight-line “Turquie” origin indicator on face, prominent red oval “Autriche / P. Huningue” French entry mark, large grey circular “Le Havre / 10 Aout 1838 (Bureau)” dater at left and red boxed “P’P’” handstamp, originally addressed to Le Havre and then redirected to New York, reverse with bold Austrian disinfection handstamp bearing the imperial arms and “Netto di Fuora et di Dentro” (“purified outside and inside”), wax-seal traces, a partial two-line italic handstamp and partial Havre and Paris transit markings, large manuscript “90” denoting 9 décimes French accountancy mark and a smaller “16”, partial contents signed by Horatio Southgate, Episcopal missionary then on his 1836–39 Near Eastern tour, discussing mission needs and arrangements, typical file folds, light toning and small seal disturbances, otherwise sound and well-travelled disinfected cover with missionary content.
