407 CVR FHT1 image1912 (August 12), Chinese Immigration Act tax certificate (“Chinese Head Tax” certificate), black and brown, no. 42922 issued at Victoria, B.C, bearing the embossed seal of the Immigration Office and a round purple handstamp reading “Canada / Chinese Immigration / AUG 12 1912 / Victoria, B.C.”, with manuscript signature of the Controller of Chinese Immigration, all tying an affixed portrait of the applicant secured with two metal grommets, the reverse showing re-registration in compliance with the 1923 updated Immigration Act, a powerful artifact of Canada’s exclusionary immigration policies toward Chinese nationals in the early 20th century, expected folds and some edge wear yet remarkably well preserved and exceptionally rare, especially poignant as it was issued to a child and thus exempt from the standard $500 fee; under the Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 and its subsequent amendments, Chinese immigrants were required to pay an increasingly punitive entry tax, which by 1903 had reached $500—equivalent to more than two years’ wages for a labourer—in a deliberate attempt to restrict Chinese settlement in Canada. 418 CVR FSC27, FSC29a image1916 (August 4), Exchequer Court of Canada “IN PRIZE” document, pertaining to the seizure of the ship "Oregon," bearing two examples of the very rare 25c blue 1876 Young Queen Supreme Court issue with red and purple “IN PRIZE” overprints together with a 10c blue Victoria with red and purple “IN PRIZE” overprint, a great rarity destined for an advanced collection.

Under the British Prize Court Acts of 1914 and 1915, adopted by the Privy Council of Canada in 1914, a "Prize Court" was established to process claims against property seized from the country's wartime enemies. Supreme Court Law Stamps were overprinted “IN PRIZE” and affixed to documents to pay registration fees related to these seizures. In this case, the document pertains to the seizure of the ship "Oregon," a German-owned but American-flagged schooner which was seized by the HMCS Rainbow on April 23, 1916. (Image 1) (Image 2)
