110L1, Chicago, Illinois, Moody's Penny Dispatch, 1856 (1c) Black on
glazed red, vertical strip of three, o.g., each stamp showing a different variety after "Dispatch": period (Type Ia), colon (Type Ib), and comma (Type Ic), which correspond to positions 3/5/7 in Scott Trepel's plating of this issue
(Chronicle Vol. 46, No. 4, November 1994), bright color with remarkably little of the oxidation so often seen on this type of paper, backstamped "SS&CCO." (Scott Stamp & Coin Company), Very Fine, this is the only recorded multiple of 110L1, and with
only 19 stamps known on or off cover represents a significant portion of the total population; given the scarcity of Chicago local stamps in general (in no small part due to the Great Chicago Fire just 15 years after this stamp was printed) and this
strip's lovely appearance we believe it to be one of the most important of all local stamp multiples, 1999 Philatelic Foundation certificate, ex-Caspary, Lilly, Boker, and Golden (Scott $18,000 is outdated and based on a 1999 auction result; Scott
also curiously lists a used strip of three although no such item is known) (Image
