1073 image65, 1861 3c Rose, tied on patriotic envelope addressed to "Capt John Lathrop/ Co J 35th Mass V./ Washington DC" by "Keedysville Md" cds (indistinct date), design shows a soldier with the British "Union Jack," cover a little bit of edge wear, Fine, described in the Bischel sale as " the only recorded example"rnJohn Lathrop gave up a promising law practice to sign up with the Massachusetts Volunteers and was commissioned as a first lieutenant. He fought at South Mountain, at Antietam, and at Fredericksburg. He was promoted to a captaincy but in the autumn of 1863, he contracted malarial fever, which compelled him to resign for disability; and there upon he returned to Boston to resume his law practice.
