4089 THE ARCHIVE OF CIVIL WAR SURGEON DR. H.S. TURRILL. 26 covers with enclosures covering the period 1874/1900 addressed to him or some of the earlier to his future wife, also includes couple of the wedding invitations and the marriage certificate plus the 1875 orders from the Surgeon General's office making his appt as "Assistant Surgeon, US Army" permanent; the enclosed letters include the typical love letters to his fiancé, several genealogy letters (he was the great-grandson of one of the founders of Milford, Conn.) and a couple of letters from soldiers he saved during the Civil War, the letters follow his travels during the period incl Fort Riley, Kansas, Willet's Point and Sacketts Harbor, NY; typical frankings and postmarks of the period with the envelope postal wear/ opening faults to varying degrees with the enclosures in Very Fine condition, a Fine and fascinating look at an Army Surgeon's life in the latter part of the 19th centuryrnDr Henry S Turrill (1842-1907), upon completion of study at Yale Medical School, was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 17th Connecticut Volunteers and immediately saw service at Fort Sumter and Charleston, S.C., seeing action in three battles in S.C. and Florida. While caring for wounded, he was captured and held for seven months at Confederate prisons in Macon, Savannah, and Charleston. After his exchange in October 1864, he returned to his regiment in Florida and saw additional action. He was the Health Officer in Jacksonville and in command of the General Hospital there until July of 1865. He returned to Connecticut with his regiment and mustered out of the service in August. He joined the "regular Army" in 1870 and was stationed out west, being involved in eight battles with the Native Americans. He rose through the ranks over the following years and in 1900 was ordered to the Philippines as Chief Surgeon of the Department of Visayas. He was made Lt Colonel and Deputy Surgeon-General, US Army in June of 1902 and given charge of purchases and disbursement of the Medical Dept of the Army and the Sanitary Dept of the Isthmian Canal Commission. He was promoted to Brig General in March 1906, the day before his retirement.
