The Consul in NY, Adolf D Straus, was, among other things, the only American citizen to hold official military rank in the Nicaraguan Army. He was also a respected war correspondent during the Civil War and was the only journalist to witness the execution of Emperor Maximillian in Mexico. (Image 1)
