Buchanan/ 10th Missouri Regiment/ 2nd Brigade/ 3rd Division/ Army of the Mississippi/ Pope's Division", ms "Please Send Your Directions", backstamped "U.S. Penny Mail/ Phila Pa Aug 12" and "Received/ Cairo Ill" August 17, envelope opened at left and a bit of edge wear slightly affecting one side of 3c stamp, Fine use; ex-AlexanderrnThe cover was carried to the Philadelphia Post Office by US Carrier service and then travelled through normal channels to Cairo, Illinois. It travelled by to Corinth, Mississippi, the location of the 10th Missouri at the time, by military courier. rnThe Army of the Mississippi was the name given to two Union armies that operated around the Mississippi River, both with short existences, during the Civil War. It participated in the Battle of Island Number Ten prior to its engagement at Corinth, Mississippi under General John Pope. The unit was discontinued in October 1862 and the regiments dispersed.
