704 CVR   image1941 (6 Apr), First Pigeon Post from Kalyan to Bombay, a pre-printed envelope showing silhouette of pigeon franked by a 1a3p mauve KGV issue with SERVICE overprint, tied by a purple "KALYAN 6 APR 1941 FIRST PIGEON MISSIVE" machine cancel, same day sideways boxed Bombay G.P.O. handstamp at left. Envelope contains a contemporary newspaper article on the "flight" as well as a booklet which contains an actual missive. Very fine and written-up on page.

707 CVR   image1828 Folded Letter from Java to England, mailed from Batavia (Jakarta) on JUL.22.1828 (dateline inside) to The London Missionary Society in London (DEC.9.1828 receivers on back, a little more than 4 months travel), with boxed “DEAL / SHIP LETTER” handstamp, rated 4 shillings. Well written-up on four album pages, with a lovely hand-drawn map of the trip this letter took (down and around the South African Cape), along with two other maps, one of Batavia showing where it sits in the context of the Java Sea, Borneo, etc. and another of the Port of Deal and where it is situated in relation to London. There is also a summary of the contents of the very long, 7-page letter inside. The lot is also accompanied by two period engravings, one captioned “The West India Docks” and the other showing the port of Deal. A very fine and scarce cover.
