1941 (Dec.2) Airmail
Cover from Canada to Hong Kong, Returned, a lovely illustrated "Oakbay Beach Hotel / Victoria's Only Seaside Hotel" cover mailed from Victoria BC on DEC.2.1941 (machine cancel dated 6 days before the Japanese bombed Hong Kong) to Hong Kong,
endorsed "Air mail to San Francisco only, then by first vessel". It received an "EXAMINED BY 1530" censorship re-sealing tape and two strikes of the purple "RETURNED TO SENDER / SERVICE SUSPENDED." handstamp. It passed through the "Enquiry Dept. /
Post Office / Victoria, B.C." boxed handstamp dated MAR.24.1942 then on to the Ottawa Dead Letter Office where it arrived on APR.7.1942 (boxed handstamp in blue). Opened on three sides for display, else very fine.

Cover from Canada to Hong Kong, Returned, a Royal Bank of Canada blue cover mailed from Montréal on DEC.3.1941 (3c postal meter stamp) to the Bank of Hong Kong, with blue two-line "Authorized for Export by / Foreign Exchange Control Board"
handstamp, an "EXAMINED BY C. 282" censor re-sealing tape and a "MAIL SERVICE SUSPENDED" handstamp in blue, as well as a "RETURN TO WRITER" pointing finger in blue. Back of the cover shows an Ottawa Dead Letter Office boxed handstamp in blue dated

1941 (Dec.4) Cover
Hong Kong to Canada, Returned, a large "The East Asiatic Company, Limited" cover mailed from Victoria / Hong Kong on DEC.4.1941 (two double circle c.d.s.) to Vancouver, British Columbia, franked with two 15c KGVI issues. The cover received a
boxed "RETOUR" handstamp in black, a boxed "NO SERVICE" handstamp in purple and a boxed "DETAINED IN HONG KONG / BY JAPANESE / FROM DECEMBER 1941 to SEPTEMER 1945" handstamp in black. Edge faults due to size and probably weight of cover, still a fine
example of a cover that was mailed just before service was suspended. It is estimated that only 200 covers bear the "Detained..." handstamp.

Canadian Postmaster General Letter Explaining Suspension of Mail Delivery to the Far East and Hong Kong, the letter, with official letterhead, reads "Due to the suspension of mail service to the Far East and later military developments in Hong
Kong, I regret to inform you that the enclosed parcel cannot be sent to its destination. It is, therefore, being returned to you. As soon as contacts can be established information will be published. Signed by the Postmaster General William Mullock.
Very fine and very rare, as not only very few of these were sent, but even fewer were retained.

Mailed on the "First Day of British Re-Occupation", mailed to and from Victoria / Hong Kong on SEP.28.1945 (double circle c.d.s. ties stamp), franked with a 5c green KGVI Pictorial. Bottom left shows a return address of "Navy, Army and Air Force
Institutes" and there is a manuscript ink description of the event, very fine.

1945 Octagonal "HONG
KONG 1945 POST PAID" Octagonal Franking Handstamp, on a cover addressed locally, with a return address of "The Union Insurance Society of Canton", Opening tear at left, still fine. This franking handstamp was used in the short period after HK had
resumed mail services on AUG.25.1945 and SEP.25.1945 when postage stamp use resumed. It was mainly reserved for the use of Stanley internment camp prisoners and military personnel.
