As High Commissioner for Southern Africa from 1877 to 1880 Frere implemented a set of policies that attempted to impose a British confederation, leading to the overthrow of the Cape's first elected government and a string of regional wars, notably the invasion of Zululand in 1879 and the First Boer War of 1880–1881. Frere was subsequently recalled to London to face charges of misconduct and officially censured for reckless conduct. Photo. (Image1)

Scottish horticulturist James Niven (1776-1827) was resident at the Cape, with one short return to Britain in 1803, from 1798 to 1812, acting as a collector of plants not only for Lee & Kennedy (and previously for their silent partner George Hibbert of Clapham) but also for the Empress Joséphine of France. It was to George Hibbert that Josephine turned for advice on the layout of her gardens and John Kennedy was despatched to advise on the layout of Malmaison in the English style – despite England being at war with France.
